4 ADJACENCY PAIRS
- Adjacency pair is composed of two utterances by two
speakers, one after the other.
- Adjacency pairs include : greeting-greeting,
compliment-acceptance/rejection, complaint-apology/
-
denial, request-acceptance/ rejection, question-answer.....
Example:
A:What is your name?
B: My name is An
7.5 CONDITIONAL RELEVANCE
- According to the principle of conditional relevance, one
utterance provides for the relevance of a following type
of utterance by setting up an expectation of what is likely
to follow. If the expected type of utterance does not
occur, then it is ‘an event’ and is deemed to be
‘officially’, or ‘notably’ absent (Schegloff, 1972: 76)
