Introduction

Minerals are solid substances that occurs

naturally are needed for organisms for their
growth, repairing tissue, metabolization, and
other body processes.
Minerals are made of either only one elements
or more elements combined together. Such as
Sodium, Potassium, Iron etc.
Different minerals have different functions and
effects to organisms.
Classification
There are 20 or so inorganic mineral elements
are considered to be essential to animal life.
Essential mineral elements are divided into
two classes according to their concentration in
animal body:
• Macroelements
• Trace or Microelements
Macroelements are needed in large amounts.
Microelements are needed in trace or very
small amounts.
Functions of Essential Mineral Elements

● Essential components of
skeletal structures (bones,
teeth)
● Transmission of nerve
impulses.
● Transfer of oxygen in blood.
● Muscle contraction
Functions of Essential Mineral Elements

● Maintaining proper fluid

balance
● Acid-base balance
● Maintaining Osmotic Pressure
● Components of other
compounds
● Activation of enzymes
Conclusion

Minerals are essential substances for animal

life. They are important not only as components
of the body but also for participating in many
physiological functions in animal body. So they
should be present in the dietary supply
according to their requirements.
