INTRODUCTION

• Hilsa is an important migratory fish species in


Bangladesh.
• It is also commercially a very important fish.
• Hilsa has a high demand not only in
Bangladesh, but also in neighboring countries.
• But overfishing resulted in decreased hilsa
production
• DoF and BFRI established some sanctuaries and
GoB declared ban period on hilsa
• As a result, Hilsa production has been increased
again.
• In 2017-18, hilsa contributed about 12.9% of
the total fish production of Bangladesh
What is Hilsa Sanctuary?

• A fish sanctuary is a demarcated


protected area, where targeted fish
will not be disturbed or captured.
• A hilsa sanctuary is an area which is
established on the purpose of
conservation of hilsa fish species.
• It is one of the effective tools for
protecting fish stock.

CONCLUSION
• Hilsa generates employment and income for
millions of people in Bangladesh and neighboring
countries.
• Hilsa sanctuary and ban period were one of the
regulatory measures by the government to
conservation of hilsa
• Proper implementation of the conservation
measures will result in abundance of hilsa.
• We all should cooperate for the protection and
conservation of hilsa.
