through a critical period and it should be
conserved properly.
❖ Government is adopting various policies,
legislations and innovative approaches in
order to the conservation of biodiversity.
What is conservation of biodiversity

● Conservation of biological diversity leads

to conservation of essential ecological
diversity to preserve the continuity of
food chains.
● It aims at protection, enhancement and
scientific management of the biodiversity.
● It can be done through in situ and ex situ
conservation

6
Conservation of Biodiversity in Bangladesh

● Bangladesh has adopted various in situ

and ex situ conservation measures
● 5 major conventions and agreements
related to biodiversity conservation
have been signed, such as CBD, CITES,
WHC, RAMSAR, CMS.
● Declaration of protected areas (PA),
ecologically critical areas (ECA), World
Heritage Sites and Ramsar sites.
● The government has also developed
various legislative policies and
inventions to conserve its remaining
biodiversity. 7

prepared and approved, is expected to be a key government
document to be the guideline for this purpose. The objectives of
the document were:
● Provide guidance for future resource use and for conservation
of resources;
● Suggest actions to be adopted by the government to ensure
conservation of resources while keeping up the current pace
of resource utilisation and economic development

National Environment Management Action Plan (NEMAP)

● Maintenance of the ecological balance and overall

progress and development of the country through
protection and improvement of the environment;
● Protection of the country against natural disasters o
Identification and control of all types of activities
related to pollution and degradation of environment
● Undertaking environmentally sound development
programs in all sectors
● Sustainable long term and environmentally congenial
utilization of all natural resources

Implementation of Policies

Some national targets and activities are followed towards

the implementation of the policies.
Also some other steps such as capacity development,
resource mobilization, funding etc are taken.
In most cases, Government of Bangladesh, World Bank,
ADB, some international organizations work together for
the implementation of the policies.

14
Challenges

There are some challenges also in implementation of the

legislative policies. These are as follows:
● Understanding of the policy makers
● Effective mobilization of resources
● Willingness of the Government and Development
partners to increase allocation
● Constraints of technical knowledge on project
preparation

15
Conclusion

Like in other regions of the globe, the biodiversity of Bangladesh is

also entering through a critical period.
It is now essential to conserve the country’s remaining biodiversity
rich areas by bringing them under legislative policies and proper
implementation of them.
We all should spread awareness and work together for the
conservation of biodiversity of Bangladesh.
