CLASSROOM
BY Lizeth Alba and Miguel Betancur
RESEARCH QUESTION

How might EFL eighth grade students experience an

interactive and effective oral communication using Whatsapp
video status to reflect upon cultural topics with English native
speakers at IPN school?
TENTATIVE PROJECT TITLE

Whatsapp: a cultural speaking experience in an EFL classroom

VISION OF LANGUAGE
As culture and ideology : Tudor
-Language as means of expression and communication.
-Language embodies and expresses aspects of the culture and world view of its
speakers.
- Full communicative competence: ability to interact with the culture and world view
of the speakers of this language.

For instance:
-Colombian expressions compared to American expressions.
VISION OF LEARNING
Community learning:
Because our role as teacher researchers is to be participant observers. It
means, to be able to identify a specific educational problem in the classroom,
plan different strategies in order to find a solution and then, put into practice
these strategies and action plans. Therefore, we are looking for creating
cultural and intercultural awareness among eighth graders at a public school as
well as their speaking skills are enhanced through the use of WhatsApp video
statues. On the other hand, through our project, we as pre-service teachers are
contributing to our educational and vocational training, and we are gaining a
deepened sense of civic responsibility, social justice, and commitment to the
society through community service.
VISION OF LEARNING
Our approach is the Intercultural approach, so this is our vision of learning:
Intercultural language learning:
-It involves developing with learners an understanding of their own language(s)
and culture(s) in relation to an additional language and culture.
For instance:
- See the world from the point of view of a different culture and reflect upon it.
- Learn to interpret human communication and interaction with foreign
cultures.
Habit formation: Tudor : Use language with conscious reflection or planning:
fluency communication.
-Answer questions asked by their classmates while recording a video on
WhatsApp.
VISION OF CLASSROOM
The communicative classroom:
Our project’s emphasis is on interactive and effective communication. Thus, the
dynamic of our EFL classrooms will be based on real-life simulations through a
more spontaneous practice in order to prepare eighth graders to be able to
communicate in meaningful and conscious ways in real outdoors contexts.
For instance:
The topics that will be part of the practice such as dance, food and weather are
related to real life.
As socialization:
Because our project is based on the Intercultural approach. So it aims to foster
among eighth students at the IPN school cultural knowledge and awareness to
create a sense of the world around. Therefore, it allows developing real
citizenship among learners.
e.g: To learn to respect different cultures and different opinions.
