• The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to
ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox—the
day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new
year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the
Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each
of its 11 days. In addition to the new year, Atiku celebrated the mythical victory of the
Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political
purpose: It was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current ruler’s divine
mandate was symbolically renewed.
HOW MY FAMILY CELEBRATES NEW
YEARS
• At the New Years my family usually goes out to a different country
or a different city to enjoy the other peoples culture. My parents
usually buy us (me and my brothers) some presents to enjoy
ourselves and not be bored. We also buy food and enjoy it in the
hotel because we stay up late till its 12 am and January 1st. We turn
on all electronics like the TV (Television), our phones or sometimes
even our laptop to see other countries celebrate first.

• They also celebrate like me they just usually light up the
fireworks go out and eat and enjoy for what a new year is
coming. Or they just stay inside their home enjoy their
gadgets and electronics waiting for the new year and
excited to say, “Happy New Year!” at 12 am at January 1.
HOW DOES CANADA CELEBRATE THE
NEW YEARS
• Many people start January 1 at parties to welcome the New Year on the evening of December
31. Many parties are at people's homes or in bars and clubs. However, in some rural areas,
particularly in the province of Quebec, some people spend the night ice fishing with groups of
friends. Many New Year's Eve parties continue into the early hours of January 1, so some
people may spend most of the first day of the year recovering from the celebrations. Others
take the opportunity to enjoy some time in the wintry Canadian landscape or to return home
from their Christmas vacation.
