o In this lecture, we will discuss 4-Stroke Internal
Combustion(IC) Engine, which includes: o Parts of IC Engine o Intake stroke o Compression stroke o Power stroke o Exhaust stroke Stroke o What is stroke? o Linear distance which the piston travels from Top Dead Center (TDC) to Bottom Dead Center (BDC). Piston Piston cylinder arrangement Connecting rod o Connects the piston to the crankshaft o Converts reciprocating piston motion to rotary motion at the crankshaft. Crank shaft o Works with connecting rod to change reciprocating to rotary motion. o Transmits mechanical energy from the engine. o Made of heat-treated steel alloys. Connecting rod o 4-stroke cycle engines require four strokes of the piston to complete the five events necessary for engine operation. o 1 piston stroke = ½ crankshaft revolution. o 4 piston strokes = 2 crankshaft revolutions. Intake Stroke o Intake valve open. o Piston moves down (TDC to BDC) in cylinder. o Low pressure is created in cylinder. o Air is brought into the combustion chamber due to pressure differences. Compression Stroke o Both valves closed. o Piston moves from BDC to TDC o Air in combustion chamber is compressed, raising its temperature. o Near TDC of Compression stroke, diesel fuel is injected into the combustion chamber. Power Stroke o Both valves are closed o Air-fuel mixture burns rapidly o Expansion of the burning air- fuel mix applies force to the head of the piston o Piston is driven down in the cylinder. Exhaust Stroke o Piston moves from BDC to TDC. o Exhaust valve is open. o Burnt air-fuel mixture is scavenged from combustion chamber. 4-Strokes 4-Strokes
