USES AND

APPLICATION
• Alternators are synchronous machines used
to convert mechanical energy to AC electric
power.

• It also generates electricity using the

principle, when the magnetic field around a
conductor changes, a current is induced in the
conductor.
• Alternators are used in
modern automobiles to charge
the battery and to power the
electrical system when its
engine is running.
TYPES OF ALTERNATORS
ACCORDING TO APPLICATION
 AUTOMOTIVE TYPE
- This is the most commonly used in
modern automobiles to charge the
battery and supply current. And uses
current generated to power vehicle’s
electrical component. One thing is
important to this alternator is that it will
balance between efficiency and cost.
 DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE
TYPE
- Itis a type of railway
locomotive in which the prime
mover is a diesel engine. In which
the main purpose of this is to
produce the required electric
power.
 MARINE TYPE
- It can be used in yachts, which is
also similar to automotive alternators
with appropriate adaptations to the
salt water environment. These
alternators are designed to be
explosion proof so that brush sparking
will not ignite explosive gas mixtures
in an engine room environment.
 BRUSHLESS TYPE
- Which serves as the main power
source in an electrical power generation
plant. It has two parts one is excitation
alternator part and the other one is the
main alternator part where in excitation,
the armature is rotor and the exciter field
winding serves as the stator while in the
main alternator the main field is the rotor
and the armature is the stator.
 RADIO FREQUENCY ALTERNATOR
- This alternator is differed from an
ordinary electric generator that
produce radio frequency current that
rotated much faster, and had many
more magnetic "poles" on the rotor
and stator.
