Surgical Gloving

It is done after gowning
Gloves may be put on in either an open or
closed fashion.

Purpose: worn to complete sterile dress, in


order the one who wears them handles
sterile instruments.

Parts of a Glove:
1. Palmar surface
2. Dorsal surface
3. Finger holes
4. Cuff
5. wrist

Closed gloving-- used when the surgeon
will be wearing a sterile surgical
gown.
Open gloving-- used when the surgeon
will be performing a minor
procedure without wearing a gown.

Closed Gloving Technique
This is done after
Scrubbing of hands
and Gowning.
1) Use left hand while
still inside the gown
to pick up the
folded edge of the
right glove.
2) Hold you right hand
out with the palm
up, still inside the
sleeves.

3. Lay the right
glove on the right
palm. position it
with the gloves
fingers pointing
towards the elbow
and the cuff end
pointing towards
the finger tips. The
thumb of the glove
should be over the
thumb of your
right hand.

4)Use your right hand to
grasp( which is still inside
the sleeve) to grasp the
bottom fold of the cuff
end of the right glove.
You are touching a sterile
gown with a sterile glove.

5)With your left hand (still


inside the gown sleeve)
grasp the right glove cuff
by the top fold of the cuff
end, and pull the right
glove cuff up and over
the right gown cuff.

6)Adjust the right glove
cuff over the right
gown cuff as
necessary, keeping the
left hand inside the
gown.

7)Work your right hand


down into the glove. If
the fingers are not in
place, do not be
concerned. You can
correct them when
both gloves are on.

8)Pick up the left glove
with the right gloved
hand.
9)Hold your left hand, palm
up inside the gown
sleeves.
10)Place the left glove on
the left palm (which is
still inside the gown) with
the glove fingers pointing
towards the elbow and
the cuff end pointing
towards the finger tips.
Position the glove thumb
over the left thumb of the

11)Use your left hand to grasp the bottom
fold of the cuff end of the left glove.
12)Grasp the top fold of the edge with the
gloved right hand, and pull the glove cuff
up and over gown cuff.
13)Work your left hand down into the left
glove.
14)Turn up and adjust the cuffs off both
gloves.
15)Pull the gloves fingers out at the ends to
reposition your fingers if necessary.
