Broaching

INTRODUCTION

• Broaching is a machining process that uses a

toothed tool, called a broach, to remove
material.
• There are two main types of
broaching: linear and rotary.
PROCESS

• Process depends on the type of broaching

being performed.
• Surface broaching is very simple as either the
work piece is moved against a stationary
surface broach, or the work piece is held
stationary while the broach is moved against
it.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• The broaching operation is best employed in
high volume work pieces:
• a customized broach usually costs between
$8,000 to $40,000.
• The complete cycle hardly is over than 20
seconds, with great productivity and quality.
TYPES

• Internal Broaching:
• Internal broaching is mainly used to enlarge
holes. This process generally uses pull type
broach but for lighter work piece, it sometime
uses push type broach.
External Broaching:

• External broaching is mainly used to flattening

of a surface, machining key ways, slots,
grooves on outer part of an object such as
shaft etc. This process is also used for gear
manufacturing process.
Pull Types Broaching:
• A broach which is subjected to tensile force
during machining, called pull broach and the
type of broaching operation by pull broach is
known as pull broaching. This operation
prevents misalignment and buckling.
BROACHING MACHINES
• Broaching machines are
relatively simple as they only
have to move the broach in a
linear motion at a
predetermined speed and
provide a means for handling
the broach automatically.
• Most machines are hydraulic,
but a few specialty machines
are mechanically driven.
• The machines are
distinguished by whether
their motion is horizontal or
vertical.
MAIN PARTS OF A BROACHING
MACHINE
• Ram – It is actuated by the piston in the cylinder
of the hydraulic drive.
• Hydraulic Drive – It is housed in the base and
powered by electric motor.
• Bed – Bed is the robust casting on which the
main units are mounted.
• Pulling Slide – It supports the front end of ram.
• Puller Head – It secures the pull end of the
broach.
ADVANTAGES
• High production rate because whole amount
of metal is removed in single stroke.
• High surface finish and better accuracy.
• Broaching can be used for both internal and
external machining.
• Broaching machines are simple in design and
construction.
• It can be used for mass production.
DISADVANTAGES
• High tool cost.
• This process needs a special design tool for
each process.
• This is not suitable for small batch production.
• It is only suitable for machining holes and flat
surfaces.
PPLICATIONS
• Bearing caps
• Bearing bodies
• Cylinder blocks
• Connecting rods
• Gears and Turbine
• Keyways
• Splines
