Instructions for Writing B1 Preliminary Part
2: (Article or Story)
Note :part 1( the email) and this part 2 have a time of 45 mins (22 mins 30 secs each)

Writing B1 Preliminary: Part 2 In this part, as a candidate, you have to write just like in the email
another text of around 100 words , but this time you will be able to choose between  two types of
Writing :

Article ( article )
Story ( story )

Writing B1 Preliminary: Article (Article)

This format is especially new in the Writing of the PET , since in the past the article began to be
worked at level B2, but since the changes in 2020 , the Writing of the B1 does include an article as a
Writing task option in part 2.

However, you should not worry about that, since the fact that there is a new type of Writing does
not mean that the level is more difficult, because remember, PET is a B1 level test, and that has not
changed with the new updates.
WHAT IS AN ARTICLE ?

It is a text in which you must talk about a topic that you like or in which
you are an expert . But don't worry, as we are talking about a B1 level, an
intermediate-low level, you are not expected to know how to talk about
anything in an advanced way, even if you are an expert in the field. In
addition, another of the vital characteristics is that an article must be
entertaining for the reader . But I'm telling you the same, nobody with a
B1 is going to write for Forbes magazine, so you don't have to worry too
much about this aspect either.

Instructions for Writing B1 Preliminary Part 2:
ARTICLE

As you can see, the instructions are very clear. In this case, you must respond to an ad that you have seen on
a web page , and the theme is movies. In general, the articles will be about topics that allow you to express
your opinion , and they will not be very rare topics, because at level B1 they cannot complicate our lives very
much, really.
ARTICLE STRUCTURE
Structure of a B1 article
If there is something important in any Writing, regardless of the level, it is that its
structure is well defined, both grammatically and visually. In general, an article
must always have the following parts:

1.Title
2.Introduction
3.Idea development 1
4.Development of idea 2 (if any)
5.Conclusion / Recommendation / Closure

In fact, that type of structure is repeated in many types of Writings at higher

levels, with some slight changes, obviously.
EXAMPLE OF THE TASK
Here’s an example taken from Cambridge English sample
If you look closely, each paragraph focuses
on some of the ideas raised in the task:
•Introduction: Introduction to What kind
of films do you enjoy?
•2nd paragraph: Development of What
kind of films do you enjoy?
•3rd paragraph: Do you prefer to watch
them at the cinema or at home? Why?
•Last paragraph: I ask the reader a
question, since it is a website where they
can surely write comments.
Expressions to use in any B1 article

Expressions to use in any B1 article
To hook the reader

To engage the reader there are infinite strategies, but among them we can highlight the use of
exclamations and questions, as well as the way of addressing the reader in the second person
and even with imperatives.
example
Don't worry! (exclamation, imperative)
Keep on reading! (exclamation, imperative)
Imagine that… (imperative)
What about you? (asks in second person)
Isn't that great? (question)

Example 2
You must use connectors in this part of the test.
some were seen last class but they are used in every writing.

Reason and result connectors

because (of), as, since :We use these three connectors to express the reason or reason for something" Because " is more
common than " as " or " since “

"She didn't tell him  because / as / since she was afraid to."

(No le digo nada porque/ya que tenía miedo de hacerlo)

So & therefore :We use " so " and  " therefore " to express  the result of something . " So " usually appears in the middle
of the sentence, while " therefore " usually goes at the end and followed by a comma.

“I’m really tired so I won’t go out tonight.”

(Estoy muy cansado, así que no voy a salir esta noche.)
“I’m really tired. Therefore, I won’t go out tonight.”
(Estoy muy cansado. Por eso, no voy a salir esta noche.)
To & In order to
We use them when we want to  explain why we do something, the reason . They are always followed by an infinitive.

“I have joined an academy to learn English.”

“I’ve joined an academy in order to learn English.”
(Me he apuntado a una academia para aprender inglés.)

We can also answer a question that starts with  Why ...?  using " to " or " in order to ".
Why have you joined an academy? To / In order to learn English. ”

Contrast connectors
But, although & though
These expressions  connect two contrasting ideas and are followed by a sentence (pronoun / noun + verb). " But " is usually used in the
middle of a sentence, preceded by a comma, while " although / though " can be in the middle or at the beginning of a sentence.

The hotel was excellent, but the food was not good.”

(El hotel era genial, pero la comida no era buena.)

“The hotel was excellent although/though the food was not good.”

(El hotel era genial, aunque la comida no era buena.)

“Although/though the food was not good, the hotel was excellent.”

(Aunque la comida no era buena, el hotel era genial.)
In spite of / despite
Are used to contrast two ideas . These connectors are followed by a noun or a noun phrase with - ing ; they are never
followed by a sentence (pronoun / noun + verb). Also, they can appear at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence.

“The hotel was excellent despite the food being bad/the bad food.”

“The hotel was excellent in spite of the food being bad/the bad food.”
(El hotel era genial a pesar de la mala comida.)

“Despite the food being bad/the bad food, the hotel was excellent.”
“In spite of the food being bad/the bad food, the hotel was excellent.”
(A pesar de la mala comida, el hotel era genial.)

However
is an expression that connects two contrasting sentences . It is normally used at the beginning of the second sentence,
preceded by a period and followed by a comma.

“The hotel was excellent. However , the food was awful. ”

(El hotel era excelente. Sin embargo, la comida era malísima.)

«People tend to put on weight in middle age. However , gaining weight is not inevitable. ”
(La gente tiende a engordar cuando se hacen mayores. Sin embargo, esto puede evistarse.)
Addition connectors
Also, too, in addition, moreover
These connectors are used to  add more information  to something we have said.
" Too " usually goes at the end of a positive sentence. " Also " (as a sentence adverb), " in addition " and " moreover "
usually go to the beginning of the sentence and followed by a comma.

“Buying car is a long-term commitment. Also, a car is very expensive to run.”

“Buying car is a long-term commitment. In addition, a car is very expensive to run.”
“Buying car is a long-term commitment. Moreover, a car is very expensive to run.”
(Comprar un carro es un compromiso a largo plazo. Además, un carro puede ser muy caro de mantener.)
“Buying car is a long-term commitment. A car is very expensive to run, too.”
