ASSESSMENT TWO: PHOTOGRAPHIC PRESENTATION

Students will select one news photograph of their choice and will respond to a number of questions relating to the role of
visual representation in journalism.

They will present this as a 1minute video (iPhone) piece, and a 2 minutes talk (equal  to 200 words) during their online
tutorials. Presentations will occur between Weeks 6-10.

Step 1: During the first weeks of the semester, students will be organised into presentation slots (between Weeks 6-10).

Step 2: Students are required to upload a 1minute video (iPhone) presentation to the Assessment 2, Drop Off Box on Moodle
at least 24 hours before their online presentation date.

Step 3: Next students are required to give a 2 minutes talk in an assigned slot during their online tutorial (between Weeks 6 to
10).

Choose a news photograph of your choice; a news photograph is defined as having been published in a recognised news
media outlet, in print or online. The presentation should consider the following questions: Does the photograph have a clear
narrative? If so what is it? Also, students need to provide some context (where and how the photograph was used) and also
insights into the photographer.

The task involves a critical analysis of the photograph in context with the unit's readings and requires students to work in a
group. The assessment will be determined by a compelling, engaged and well-coordinated presentation. The pedagogical aims
will establish a ‘safe’ learning environment in which students are valued for their different opinions.

Word limit: 1 video piece and 2 minute presentation (2 minutes= 200 words each).
Value: 15%
Presentation requirements: General talk, (power point is not required).
Estimated return date: The presentations are assessed in the week of presenting and comments are returned by email.
