Brief information about CAR

02 What is CAR How to conduct CAR 05

03 CAR characteristic
Background
In the learning and teaching process,
every teaching situation is exclusive in
terms of content, level, student skills
Research
and learning styles, teacher skills and
teaching styles, and many different
factors.
So what?
A dynamic method of teaching is needed to
fulfill the expectation for the teacher in terms
of knowledge and the students in terms of
outcome. To achieve those goals, a systematic
approach is needed the most rather than a
personal reflection from the teacher.

That is why classroom action research

exists.
What is
Classroom
Action
Research?
• Classroom action research begins with a question or
questions about classroom experiences, issues, or
challenges.

• It is a reflective process which helps teachers to explore

and examine aspects of teaching and learning and to take
action to change and improve.

Simplified,
Classroom Action research is a method or a systematic
approach for researcher of finding out what is suitable for
their own classroom situation.
WHAT SUITABLE MEANS?

Important points about CAR

As a reflection
systematic and data-based for the teacher as
01 a reflection

Main concern
02 the problem in the researcher own
classroom.

Practical findings
The research tend to focus on practical
03 or feasible findings.
Important points about CAR

The findings
cannot always be generalized to other
04 teaching situation

The process
05 The process is flexible.

Procedures
Similar with the general scientific model
06 But more informal manner.
CAR Major
Characteristics
3 Major Characteristics

Reflective Inquiry
CAR initiated from the problems that arise
01 during the teaching-learning process to be
solved.

Collaborative
CAR is conducted collaboratively with
02 all parties to set up required
improvement

Reflective
CAR emphases more on reflection on the process
03 and the result of the study is used to improvement
and solution.
Principles of
CAR
Principles of CAR

Researcher
Teacher has a primary role to teach and the
01 research not supposed to interfere the teaching
process.

Data collection
Data collection supposed to be
02 integrated with teaching and learning
process.

Methodology
03 Reliable methodology required so the researcher can
formulate the hypotheses and develop applicable
strategies to the classroom situation.
Principles of CAR

Impactful
04 The diagnosed problem should have an impact
toward the better teaching and learning process.

Ethical
Data collection supposed to be
05 integrated with teaching and learning
process.

Scope
06 The scope mainly about the problem which occur in
classroom activity.
How to conduct Classroom Action Research

01. Identify the question or problem

in the classroom
• Question should be concern in area that the researcher
will change.

• Should be under the teaching control such as teaching

methods or strategies, instrument for students’
assessments, and also classroom activities.

• It should be Practical questions.

How to conduct Classroom Action Research

02. Literature review

• Gathering information is essential in CAR.

• The information could be background literature.

How to conduct Classroom Action Research

03. Plan the research strategy

• Quantitative and qualitative can be implemented in

Classroom Action Research

• The design can be various.

For example:
Descriptive case study, pretest-posttest, etc.
How to conduct Classroom Action Research

04. Gather the data for the researh

• Classroom Action Research rely heavily on data.

• Triangulation of data is the way to get the validity.

• The data consist of teacher and student’s data.

• Put attention to the range of data with various

perspectives
How to conduct Classroom Action Research

05. Validate the data

• Take a look at the result in terms of practical

significance.

• For quantitative, researcher can use t-tests, correlations,

table, or graph.

• For qualitative, data can be analyzed by citing

supporting evidence.
How to conduct Classroom Action Research

06. Take the action

• After reviewed the data, researcher can use the finding

to make the suitable plan for teaching strategies to
solve the learning problem
How to conduct Classroom Action Research

07. Evaluation

• Evaluate the researcher through the data. Researcher

can use the data to infer the whole thing during the
execution.

• The data will aid the researcher to separate what

worked and what did not work from the action.
How to conduct Classroom Action Research

08. Share the findings

• Researcher can share the findings with the other

researcher.
