CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

GUIDE 2

Continuous Assessment Guide 2 details the assessment
format of the MPU courses (TITAS, HUBUNGAN
ETNIK, PENGAJIAN MALAYSIA 2) offered to the 1 st
semester students of the September 2017 semester intake.

The courses are listed in Table 1 in the next slide. Table 1


also provides the mark distribution of the courses for:
a) Continuous Assessment (70%)
b) Final Examination (30%)

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
STRATEGY (1)

The continuous assessment is conducted ONLINE and


uses TESTING as a strategy to drive, direct and
encourage self-directed learning. For the strategy to be
effective, students need to be informed prior the testing
session on:

a) What they will be tested (Topics to be covered)


b) How they will be tested (Online discussion, MCQ or
SEQ format)
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
STRATEGY (2)

The continuous assessment consists of the


following 3 components:
1. Online Discussion (20%)
2. MCQ Quizzes (20%)
3. SEQ Tests (30%)
ONLINE DISCUSSION (20 %)
• Online discussion is conducted in the Synchronous E-learning
Tutorial as scheduled and in Task Forum.
• There are TWO (2) tasks for online discussion, Task 1 and
Task 2.
• Each task is based on selected topics of the module.
• Each online discussion in the Synchronous E-learning Tutorial
is conducted in TWO (2) sessions (refer to Table 2). Each
session is facilitated by an e-tutor and lasts for ONE (1) hour.
• Online discussion based on each task in Task Forum carries
10% and student’s’ participation is graded by e-tutor based on
the marking scheme provided.
MCQ QUIZZES (20 %)
• There are TWO (2) Quizzes.
• Each quiz is based on the same topics selected for the
online discussion in the synchronous e-learning tutorial.
• There are FIVE (5) MCQs per quiz.
• Questions are in Bahasa Malaysia.
• Each quiz carries 10% (2 marks per question)
• Students are given 15 minutes to complete each quiz.
• Students are given randomized sets of questions.
• Only ONE (1) attempt is allowed for students to do the quiz.
• Scoring of students’ responses to the quiz is automated.
SEQ TESTS (30 %)

• There are TWO (2) Tests.


• Each test is based on the same topics selected for the online
discussion in the synchronous e-learning tutorial.
• There are THREE (3) SEQs per test.
• Questions are in Bahasa Malaysia.
• Each test carries 15% (5 marks per question)
• Students are given 30 minutes to complete each test.
• Students are given randomized sets of questions.
• Only ONE (1) attempt is allowed for students to do the test.
• Scoring of students’ responses to the quiz is done by e-tutor
based on the marking scheme provided.

learning Tutorials and Continuous Assessment for a semester.

ONLINE DISCUSSION TASK
Online discussion is conducted during the synchronous e-
learning tutorial, facilitated by e-tutor.

Task: An example:
It has been argued that essay questions are better
than multiple-choice questions in assessing
students’ performance.
Do you agree? Discuss

Note:
The task should be framed in such a manner that it will allow for free
expression of opinions. It should provoke discussion, argument and
intellectual discourse among students and between students and e-
tutors.

Note:
For a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ), students are
required to pick the answer among the four options.
SEQ : An Example

List THREE (3) suggestions for writing essay


questions for each suggestion, write a short statement,
explaining why the suggestion is useful for improving
the validity of your essay assessment.

Note:
Short-answer Essay Question (SEQ) is a type of essay
question that restricts or limit both the content of
students’ answers and the form of their written
responses
