What is Prison?
In American English, prison and jail are usually treated as having separate definitions. The
term prison or penitentiary tends to describe institutions that incarcerate people for longer
periods of time, such as many years, and are operated by the state or federal governments. The
term jail tends to describe institutions for confining people for shorter periods of time (e.g. for
shorter sentences or pre-trial detention) and are usually operated by local governments.
whether in U.K and India there is no different institution for jail and prisoners.

Characteristics of Prison Environment.
When we see such news in television news channel that such prison become like
holiday camps and state life in prison is too easy, they are contrasting what they
believe prison to be like with the perceived goals of imprisonment. Specifically
they are focusing on the goals of punishment and deterrence. For prison to be a
punishment must be uncomfortable experience. Another goal of imprisonment is
deterrence. We often hear about the supposed deterrent. If the threat of
imprisonment is to deter prisoners from reoffending or to deter otherwise law-
abiding citizens from committing crime, imprisonment must be unpleasant
experience.

Physical Environment of Prisons
The prison environment is stressful by its very nature and several researcher have examined the
stressors operating in prisons.

When you are in prison then you losing your freedom and autonomy. Even daily routine is dictated
by prison routine and choices such as what you will have for your dinner or what time you will get
up in morning are no longer available.
Even male and female prisoners are held separately so there is no heterosexual relationship.
Some time number of prisoners being held in one institutions so prison can be very noisy and
overcrowded.
Sharing a cell with another prisoner means there is no privacy at all.
In some prisons the front of a cell is composed of open bars which denies the prisoners any privacy
at all.

Physical Environment of Prisons.
It is depending on the resources in the prisons and prison routine where inmates/prisoners
might be spend a great deal of time in their cells and some can find this enforced inactivity is
stressful.
- In other words in some prison due to lack of any resources prisoners spend great deal of time
in their cell and some inmate find this enforced inactivity as stressful.
For example in some prison there is lack of any resources like in cellular jail in past time when
freedom fighters were put up in this jail at that time there is no resources so at that time many
prisoners felt stressed in this prison.
-It is quit easy to understands that how the physical environment of prison and why it is
stressful for prisoners.

Physical Environment of Prisons
Here it is very vital to make difference between sentenced and remand prisoners
and consider how their status can affect their experience of imprisonment.
First and foremost difference is Remand prisoners have yet to be convicted of
the crime they are alleged to have committed and therefore they have additional
concerns of their forthcoming trial and legal representations.
In the UNITED KINGDOM remand and sentenced prisoners are held in the
same institutions.
While in the United states prisoners who are under trial they are located in jail
and prisoners who get sentences from court of law they are located in prisons.
