Operated by the NorthWind Power Development Corporation, the Bangui Wind Fa
rm was commissioned by then-governor Ferdinand “Bonbbong” Marcos, Jr.. The wi
ndmills have long been a must-see in the Ilocos Norte region, with more than 20 tu
rbines set up along the coast of Bangui Bay.
There is no entrance fee to see them and you can take as many photographs as yo
u want. You can also have a horse ride if you get tired walking from one turbine to
another. A horse ride is P100.

Activity tip: If it’s a particularly windy day, we suggest you either wear pants, cover
up your face and legs or brace yourself. With the wind being generated by the win
dmills and all, grains of sand are sure to pellet you like tiny stones one after anothe
r. Your shoes are sure to be filled up with sand, so make sure you shake it out befor
e heading into your car/van.

• Just an hour outside of Laoag city is the Kapurpuraw
an Rock Formation, which gets its name for the Iloca
no term “puraw” which means “white”. The natural
wonder fronts Bangui Bay and is the result of thousa
nds of years of particles deposited ashore by sea wav
es and wind.

4. Suba Sand Dunes
The Suba Sand Dunes were once made famous as the shooting locatio
ns for the 1982 award-winning movie Himala (Miracle) starring Nora A
unor and the 1980 film Panday starring “King of Philippine Movies” Fe
rnando Poe Jr. It’s current claim to fame is that of it being the shooting
site for Bagani, a teleserye starring Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil.
In fact, the sand dunes offers a group package that includes a “4×4 rid
e with uphill-down trails, sand dune tour, beach stroll, unlimited sand
boarding plus photo session at the Himala sa Buhangin Sculpture Park,
several drop-off stations and BAGANI Shooting Site”.
Location: Paoay Sand Dunes, Brgy. Suba, Paoay, Ilocos Norte
Budget: Up to P2,500 per vehicle (can fit maximum of five people)
Activity tip: Because the slopes aren’t as high as the other sand dunes,
Suba is the perfect spot for beginners learning to sand board. You can
opt to either sit or stand, whatever your choice, there will be a guide t
o assist you.

• Aw-asen Falls
• Aw-asen falls is one of the tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.
• Aw-asen falls is one of the newly discovered tourist spots
in Ilocos Sur, located on one of its remotest barangays na
mely, Santo Rosario in Sigay. Expect humps and bumps al
ong the road to the barangay as it has not been fully pav
ed. The challenge does not end there. From the baranga
y’s nearest drop-off point, you ‘ll have to hike steep terrai
ns and cross rivers before finally catching sight of majesti
c Aw-asen falls.
• Aw-asen falls measures more than 142 feet (43 meters). I
t carved a wide and very deep pool. It’s crystal-clear and
cold waters provide an instant relief after the arduous hik
e of getting here.

• Jars from Vigan City has been gaining popularity in r
ecent years. In the Iloco language, these are called
burnay. They are made by hand from a grade-A clay
which is abundant in the area. The industry dates b
ack to pre-colonial times and the burnay has been u
sed for drinking tea and as a container for local ingr
edients.

• Kayapa Falls is one of the must-see tourist spots in Il
ocos Sur.
• Cascading on one of the most laid-off locations in Il
ocos Sur, Kayapa falls features a 7-tier beauty. It’s c
ool waters emanate from forests upstream which u
sed to abound with different wildlife species such a
s deer and wild pigs. The river leading to the falls al
so thrives with shrimps and small fishes. It is a new
tourist spot in Ilocos Sur.

• The Ma Cho Temple caters to the small Taoist commun
ity of San Fernando. It was built in 1975 in dedication t
o the Chinese goddess Matzu, known as the protector
of the sea. That’s why the temple sits facing the sea.
• Numerous Buddha statues of different sizes surround t
he temple. There are also groves of mango trees. You’r
e lucky if you arrived during the fruiting season since y
ou can pick fruits for keep.

• Bulalakaw falls is one of the highest falls in La Union
, measuring around 30-50 meters high. It has a sere

ver emanating from the mountains of the adjacent
Cordillera region.

• Balay na Bato is one of the tourist spots in La Union.
• The structure is aptly named “Balay na Bato” because it is
made from the stones and pebbles collected along Luna’s
beaches. The municipality, after all, is the Pebble Capital o
f the North and stone-picking a major livelihood among t
he locals. Painted pebbles and wooden sculpture made b
y a Korean artist adorn the house’s interiors.

volunteer mountaineers during a rescue operation in 1987
when a plane crashed on its slopes.

guing history. Rumour has it that, another plane has crash

gend also says it was the site where the invading Spaniard
