• China is located in East Asia.
• China has a total land area of 9,596,961
sq km.
• China have 270,550 square kilometers of
inland lakes and rivers.
Geography
• China’s weather is extremely diverse, tropical
in the south and subarctic in the north.
• It is the fourth largest country after Russia,
Canada and USA.

• China’s coastline extends 14,500
kilometers from the border with North
Korea in the north to Vietnam in the
south. China’s coasts are on the East
China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and
South China Sea.

• China has a total population of
1,417,173,774 as of 2018.
Government of China
Form of Government
• The People’s Republic of China has been
ruled by the Communist Party since 1949
when it won the Chinese Civil War by
overthrowing the Nationalist
government.
Legislative
• National People’s Congress is the
legislative branch of the government of
China. It is consist of 2,987 members.
• Representatives are elected for 5-year
terms and meet once a year.
• it is responsible for electing the members
of the Standing Committee, the President
and Vice President of the country, and
the Premier of the State Council.
Executive
• The executive branch is made up of the State
Council, the Premier, and the President.
• The President serves as a ceremonial head of
state for a 5-year term and has little power
within the government.
• The State Council must answer to the
National People’s Congress and ensure that
its legislative decisions are carried out.

• The Premier acts as a Prime Minister and
is head of the 50-member Council, each
member the head of a ministry or
government agency.
 
Judiciary
• The Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme
People’s Procuratorate are part of the judicial
branch of the Chinese government.
•  The Supreme Court is the highest in the land,
and the National People’s Congress appoints
its 340 judges. 
• The Supreme People’s Procuratorate carries
out investigation and prosecution of crimes. It
is managed by the Office of the Procurator-
General.

Current Issues
• China is involved in a complex dispute with

which are also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan,
and asserts a claim to the Japanese-administered
Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Tai) in the Pacific Ocean.
