Motivation : Why does a acoustic guitar
has an air column?

Look at the presentation bellow!

1. Arrange the Buzzer (Vibrator)
tools and
materials
as figure
Resonant ion Basin
tube

Water
2. Star buzzer and organize the position resonant tube so
heard clearest and hardest tone

3. Measure the length of air column

3. Repeat the activity with other length position so
heard clearest and hardest

4. Record the result activity on the table

Data and Observation
Air Column Length Wave Length Frequency
Heard tone
(l ) (  = 2l ) ( f = 344 m/s :  )

0,5 m 1m 344 Hz higher

1m 2m 172 Hz lower

Conclusion
1. The column one indicates ….. Air Column Length
2. The column two indicates ….. Wave Length
3. The column three indicates ….. Frequency
4. The column four indicates ….. Hard Tone
 Compare data column one, data column two,
and data column three!

 When data column one increase data column

two increase but data column three decrease

Main Conclusion

The longer the pipe, the longer the wave

length, and the lower frequency
What to do
1. Measure the length of the pipe and write it down
in a table.
2. Stretch the rubber band across the hole of one of
the end pipe.
3. Hold the stretched band tighly.
4. Put the stretched band close to your ear and pluck
it. Listen to the tones.
5. Loosen the band bit by bit and listen again.
6. Do it again while adjusting the stretched band to
get a single tone. At this stage, you will hear louder
sound.
7. Now, exchange your pipe with your friend’s with
has different length and do the experiment once
more.
Activity Resonance
 Sound is produced from vibration. Sometimes the vibration makes
objects around vibrate too. It is called resonance. Lot of musical
instruments use it. How is tone arranged in flute? By opening and
closing the holes in the flute.

Problems
 Can you find out the resonance, wave length, and sound frequency of
a pipe with two openings?

What you need

- Rubber band
- A ruler
- A plastic pipe or bamboo with two openings
Analysis
 The single tone you heard in steps 6 and 7 is called resonance.
 The wave length of the resonance is twice as much as the length of the pipe. Estimate the wave
length.
 Suppose velocity v is 334 m/s, what is the frequency? Use the following formula.

 frequency = Spread Velocity

-------------------
Wave Length

 What is the wave length and the frequency of the second pipe?

 Conclusion
 What is the relation of the pipe length and the frequency and the tone produced?

 Application
 To produce different tones, a flute is played by opening and closing the holes.
 Mention other musical instruments which use pipe length to produce tones.
