Generations of

Computers
By Sreeja Hamal
Grade 8 Albatross
Roll no.27
First generation 1964-1958
• Vacuum tubes were the major component used during the first
generation of computer
• They were extremely big occupying a lot of space and not portable
• They were very costly
• They required AC
• They had very slow input and output system and were not so accurate
• For e.g. ENIAC and EDVAC
Second generation 1959-1964
• Transistors were the major component used during the second
generation of computer
• They generated less heat than first generation computers
• They moved from machine language to symbolic or machine language
• They required AC
• They were smaller faster and overall better than the first generations
computer.
• For e.g. IBM 1401, UNIVAC 1108 etc.
Third generation 1965-1974
• Integrated circuit (I.C) were the major component used during the
third generation of computer
• They were more faster and efficient because of IC
• They supported large number of high level languages
• They were able to multitask
• They became much cheaper than previous generation computers
• For e.g. IBM 360 and PDP
Fourth generation Since 1975 (currently being used)

• Microprocessor are the major component used during the fourth

generation of computer
• They are portable and easy to use
• They are accurate and reliable and had the ability to access to
networking
• They do not require AC
• They have the circuits to perform ALU and other control functions
system
• For e.g. PDP 11, STAR 1000 etc.
Fifth generation Since 1982 (currently developing)

• Super large scale and integrated chips (A.I artificial intelligence) will be
used as the major component the upcoming generation of computer
• A.I are the latest generation of computers which are so highly
developed that they are able to make their own decision and
communicate in natural human language
• They are currently being developed and will be used in the future more
• They will be much faster than present computer
• They will impose knowledge based problem solving techniques
• For e.g. robots
