Contemporary Ethical Theories

Contemporary theories are those that have been


developed or brought in business ethics field over the
previous decade or so. They offer an important
alternative sight which can’t be ignored. We shall be
looking at four main contemporary ethical theories.
 Virtue ethics
 Feminist ethics
 Discourse ethics
 Postmodern ethics
1. Virtue Ethics

The main massage of this ethics is “Good actions derive from


good individuals.
We can define it through the following line:

“Virtue ethics mean that morally right actions are performed


by individuals with virtuous nature. The formation of a
virtuous nature is the first step for morally right behavior or
action.”
 
2. Feminist ethics

The main goal of feminist ethics is to avoid harm and


maintain healthy relationships.

The definition of these theories can be given by


following line:
“Feminist ethics is an approach that prioritizes on
empathy, harmonious and healthy relationships and
avoids harm.”
3. Discourse ethics

Discourse ethics is an approach that argue that ethical


reflection has to start from real life experience. The
ultimate goal of these theories is to settle of conflicts
peacefully. We can define it by following line:

“Discourse ethics is an approach that aims to solve ethical


conflict by providing a process of norm generation
through rational reflection on the real life experience of all
relevant participants”
 
4. Postmodern perspectives on business ethics

It can be defined by following line:


“Postmodern ethics is an approach that locates morality
beyond the sphere of rationality in an emotional ‘moral
impulse’ towards others. It encourages individual actors to
question everyday practices and rules and to listen to and
follow their emotions, inner convictions, and ‘gut feelings’
about what they think is right and wrong in a particular
situation.”
Limitations of Traditional Ethical Theories

1. They Involve a high level of abstraction from reality


2. May be narrow in their application
3. They are overly academic
4. They are inhuman
5. They involve prescriptive approaches
