TURKISH GHAZI STATES OF
ASIA- MINOR
MENTESHE
Menteshe
One of the earliest ghazi state founded by
Menteshe Bey
Located on the extreme south- western
corner of Asia Minor
Capital was Milas in South- Western Anatolia
Menteshe bey , his sons and followers took
to sea raids in the Byzantine coast
Germiyan Dynasty
Founded in 1286 with capital at Kutahya
One of the prominent principality emerged
after decline of the Seljuk dynasty
Sent raiders as far as the Aegean sea against
the Byzantines
GERMIYAN STATE
Defeated and established independent
principalities in the coast of Aegean Sea
Rise of Aydin , Sarukhan, Menteshe etc.
Aydin Dynasty
Founded by Aydin Ghazi at Smyrna (modern
Izmir)
Led raiders to Greek and the coast of Thrace
of Byzantine Empire
Defeat of the Aydin in 1344 by a combined
army of Venice, Cyprus anf Rhodes
They regained Smyrna from Aydin
Aydin dynasty remained independent until
the end of fourteenth century when they
were subdued by the Ottomans
AYDIN STATE
Saruhan Dynasty
Founded one of the army leader of Germiyan
dynasty named Saruhan about 1300
Its capital was Manisa
Rose as as Aegean sea power
Lasted till 1390 when Bayazid I captured the
area
Final collapse in 1412 when Mohammed I
killed the last Saruhan ruler named Hizr
Karesi Dynasty
Another principality founded by the Germiyan
commanders
Built a sizable state around Mysia with capital
at Paleaocastro
Karaman Dynasty
Centred in the South- Central Anatolia( Asia
Minor)
Belonged to the Salur tribe of Oghuz tribes
From its foundation in 1300 until its decline 1487
Karamanid dynasty was a powerful force in the
area
Offered the most persistent opposition to the
Ottomans
Principality of Usman (Ottoman)
Began from the province of Sogut got as a fief
from Seljuks
Its development as a Ghazi state and ultimately
one of the largest empire in the world- extending
to Asian, African and European continents
