TEAMS – INTRODUCTION
 Buzz Group

 Five persons per group

 Write on flash card

 What you understand by the term TEAM

 Write two characteristics of a TEAM

UNDERSTANDING TEAMS
 A team is not a random collection of individuals, with
separate agenda, but a group of people who work
together on a continuing mission with common goals
and objectives. The mission is accomplished through
specific and defined tasks that may be simultaneous or
sequential and that may change from time to time”.
UNDERSTANDING TEAMS

A group of interdependent
individuals, with complimentary
skills, organized and committed to a
common purpose, goals and working
approach, for which they hold
themselves mutually accountable
 (Altalib, 1991: 134)

Consider a football team.

GROUP WORK
In line with the definition above, identify two striking features of the under-
listed examples of teams in the scriptures

 Twelve disciples of John the  Twelve disciples of Jesus

Mark 6:6-12
Baptist Acts 19:1-7
 The seventy sent out
 The one twenty in the upper
 Paul, Barnabas, Silas and
room – Acts 2
 Ananias and Sapphira
John-Mark Acts 15:40
Acts 5:1-11
 The Seven Deacons Acts:6
 The ten virgins Mathew 25
CHARACTERISTICS OF TEAMS
According to Frank LaFasto, when building a team, five dynamics
are fundamental to team success:
 The team member:: a collection of effective individuals who are
experienced, have problem solving ability, openness to addressing
the problem, and action oriented.
 Team relationships: the members of the team must be able to give
and receive feedback.
 Team problem solving: depends on how focused and clear the
goal of the team is. A relaxed, comfortable and accepting
environment and finally, open and honest communication.
CHARACTERISTICS CONTD…

 Organizational environment: The climate and culture of the

organization must be conductive to team behaviour.

 Team leadership: this depends on leadership competencies. A

competent leader is: focused on the goal, ensures a collaborative
climate, builds confidence of team members, sets priorities,
demonstrates sufficient “know-how” and manages performance
through feedback.
WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?
 Leadership is a process by which a person influences
others to accomplish an objective and directs the
organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and
coherent.

 Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences

a group of individuals to achieve a common goal
FOUR FACTORS OF LEADERSHIP
 Leader

 Follower

 Communication

 Situation - matter on hand, tasks, etc

usually follows four easily recognizable stages.

Recalibrating for Excellence
Introduction
INTRODUCTION
Recalibrating for Excellence
Introduction

INTRODUCTION
Winning depends on teamwork, and recalibration is all
about “keeping a winning team a winning team”.
 We are doing great but every year is another level. And
every level is another chance to overtake or be overtaken.
 The race is won by what obtains at the “finish line” How
many eggs reached the end bowl without a crack.
 Therefore, everyone focuses on giving their best
performance for the team to win.
 Make the vision meaningful to colleagues/members, trust
them to do what is required of them and empower them to
do it.
TEAMWORK
 Mark 3:13 – 15. For the work to stand, you must pay
attention to the choice of team members.
 This is critical for success

 For sustainability

 For Progress
THE IMPACT OF TEAMWORK
 Teamwork has a dramatic effect on organizational
performance
a) An effective team can help an organization achieve
incredible results
b) On the other hand, a team that is not working can
cause unnecessary disruption, failed delivery and
strategic failure.
TEAMWORK – COMMUNICATION
STRATEGY
 The vision, mission and objectives, must be clearly
communicated to the membership.
 There must be a communication center or department
aptly manned by a team that is:
 Polite, Obedient, Loving, Integrity, Courteous,
Encouraging and enlightened.
 Technologically sensitive to the needs of the moment.
CONCLUSION
 Teamwork in the house of God is a pre-requisite for
church growth.

 The Man of God/ Team Leader must have the vision and
mission at heart and ready to communicate and commit
the work to faithful and trusted members.

 Remember, it is God’s work so the standard operating

procedure (BIBLE) protocol must be adhered to.
