His name is Rahmatullah Syaripuddin. He was born on Ujung
Pandang, 12th October 1995. He got his bachelor degree at
Muhammadiyah University of Parepare in 2017. He is a
postgraduate student of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare.

INTRODUCTION

English is used in almost worldwide: It plays an important role


in constructing the global aspects such as technology, business,
agriculture, economic, scientific, research, social interaction,
application, etc.

The existence of English in Indonesia: English is a compulsory


subject from junior high school up to senior high school because the
government had been putting it on the national curriculum.
INTRODUCTION

The skills to be studied by Indonesian EFL


Students: On the national curriculum of Indonesia
2016, English has four skills to be studied; those are
reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Moreover,
there are also four aspects of it; those are vocabulary,
pronunciation, structure and grammar.

Indonesia EFL students’ speaking ability:

 The students’ speaking mean score was 27 and it


was collected through interview test.

 The result discovered that 63 % of students stated that


they were unsatisfied on the teaching activity in their
classroom
Research Question

Does the implementation of topic based-paired conversation


improve the Indonesian EFL students’ speaking ability?
The Objective of the Research

To find out whether or not the implementation of topic based-


paired conversation improves the Indonesian EFL students’
speaking ability.
Literature Review

Teaching speaking:
Some activities in teaching speaking: Discussion, Simulation,
Information gap, Brainstorming, Interview, Reporting, and Find
the Difference (Kayi, 2006; Efrizal, 2012; Oradee, 2012; Fitriani
et.al, 2013; Javid, 2013; Agus et.al, 2014; Asrobi et.al, 2013;
Effendi, 2015; AlMuatiri, 2013; Somjay and Jansen, 2015).

Definition of topic based-paired conversation:


Topic based-paired conversation activity is the activity that
developed Topic Talk (TT) intervention activity on the confidence
of students to utilize English orally consisting of five steps of
activities, namely deciding conversation partner, topic giving,
brainstorming, information seeking and sharing, and
conversation activity with the partner. (DeSteffen, 2015). While
pair work is one of the interaction patterns used in the modern
languages classroom, such as English as a second language (ESL)
or English as a foreign language (EFL) (Achmad and Yusuf, 2014).

Criteria of a good topic based-paired conversation:


Criteria of a good topic based-paired conversation activity is a
teacher should maximally handle the classroom and give a
chance to the students for seeking and sharing information with
their partner (Chappel, 2013).

Research Methodology

Research Design
The research is the quasi-experimental, with non-equivalent
control group design.

Population and Sample


The population of this research was the eleventh grade
students of SMA Negeri 3 Parepare academic year 2016/2017.
There were two classes of IPA, namely IPA 1 and IPA 2:
consisting of 31 students each. So the total number of population
was 62 students. The sample was taken by using total sampling
technique.

To find out the improvement of teaching speaking through
topic based paired conversation, the researcher gave interview
test to the students. In interview test, the researcher gave several
topics to be chosen by the students and then the researcher gave
1 to 3 minutes to be explained by the students.
