The Correlation Between English Debate Towards Increasing Students Speaking


Ability of Member UKM Bahasa UIN Raden Intan Lampung Year 2021/2022

A. INTRODUCTION

The number of people who adoring to be able mastering or least known the way to
Speak English in Indonesia are most likely on the well level of consideration . However the
tendency to learn Speaking Skill itself are still on the level of less emphasize , this is due to
some factor such as the less needed for using English in our daily, as stated by Cahyono &
Widianti ( 2011:35) the neighbor country such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Philipines,
English in Indonesia is categorized as the Foreign Language instead of the Second Language.
This mean that the Indonesian mostly will only learn about English inside the formal
classroom, making them in lack of changce to ecounter and learning it on the daily.

Both at School & University , the English-Teaching focus is largely on reading skill,
with less emphasis on English Grammar & Vocabulary ( Sawir, 2005; Setyiadi, 2001;
Sugirin, 1999). This teaching emphasis is based on the assumption that students will
understand an English text properly if they know the structure of English and adequate
vocabulary. One consequence of this is that teaching of the other skill- such as speaking,
writing and listening- is relatively ignored ( Sugirin, 1999). We should consider this as big
loss for our English Teaching-Learning process due to the unsufficent number of tendency
towards the other main skill in language, especially the speaking skill, because speaking is
one of the indicator to someone about the mastering ability of the language.

By presenting the following information, we could make an assumption about the


needs of media that can support our process for learning the English speaking skill. Based on
the previous finding, we know that majority of our English learning is dominantly only on the
formal classroom with the bias into the reading skill, we need to find a method for creating a
exploring environment learning for the students.
To overcome this problem we can find the method where the students is having a free
shape of expressing themselves throught the ideas they delivering about something.
According to Brown (2001 : 271 – 274) to be successful in teaching speaking several
classroom activity could be conducted such as imitation, intensive speaking, responsive
speech, transactional dialogue, interpersonal dialogue, and extensive monologue. Debate is
the example, it is one of the optimal method that almost contain all of the following activity.
Dale & Wolf (2000) define debate as a speaking situation in which opposite points of view
are presented and argued. By conducting debate, we will tempted to intensively speaking our
thought and having an active responsive speech in order to rebuttal or commenting the other
side argument. Transactional dialogue will eventually occur during the case build, among
with the interpersonal monologue and Extensive Dialogue. The teacher in this case will have
a role as the beacon about what or which information & argument should be bring on and
informing about the effective words in some case of ineffective, making the function of
Imitation presented in the activity.

Based on the descriptions and conditions which were described above, this investigation will
be continued to be conducted under the title of " The Correlation Between English Debate
Towards Increasing Students Speaking Ability of Member UKM Bahasa UIN Raden Intan
Lampung Year 2021/2022” The researcher are intended to implement and observing the
Debate Teaching Method and the increasing of students speaking ability expected to be
happen.

B. RESEARCH CONTEXT
a. Literature Review

Speaking as one of the main skill in language acting as the proof mastering the
language towards the others. Being able to performing fluent speaking mean that we have
mastering the language from the perspective of society. According to Baker (2009) speaking
as one of four skill of language is very important to be learn by the students. The reason is
throught the speaking one is able to express or delivering their ideas of their mind, speaking
is also the indicator for someone about the mastering level of the language.
Unfortunately, the current Teaching Learning of English Class in our country is
focusing mostly on Reading Skill, and creating some strigma about the importance of “ only
needing enough vocabulary & well known about the grammar” will lead them into the
mastering of language. As how Sawir (2005); Setyiadi (2001); Sugirin (1999) Both at School
& University , the English-Teaching focus is largely on reading skill, with less emphasis on
English Grammar & Vocabulary. This teaching emphasis is based on the assumption that

adequate vocabulary. One consequence of this is that teaching of the other skill- such as
speaking, writing and listening- is relatively ignored ( Sugirin, 1999).

Is it the fact Learning Speaking skill in our Formal Learning are often getting left
behind, even when it is one of the essential factor to measure our language proficiency. We
shall consider the effort about this problem, the effort that nessecary to resolve this problem.
Using Debate Activity method is one way to solve this problem, it is essentially contain every
aspect in order to make it succesfull in teaching and learning Speaking ability. Brown
( 2001 : 271-274) explain that there are several method to reach the succesfull of teaching
speaking, such as the imitation ( Drill), intensive speaking, responsive speech, transactional
dialogue (exchanging specific information), interpersonal dialogue (maintaining social
relationships), and extensive monologue (oral reports, summaries, short speeches).
English Debate Activity is one of the activity that Brown listed require to do, we
would have to discussing, thinking about the best information and the way we presented our
argument, and analyzing the possible outcome from the opposite team, making the
Transactional Dialogue and Interpersonal Dialogue to occur. By the time of Debating
Session, the learner will be ecountered by an active session of delivering the idea from both
side of the house, making an active response during the argument delivering or rebuttal
session, which is making the intensive speaking and responsive speech exist during the time.
The Extensive monologue will also automaticly used, due to the formation of argument that
based on AREL ( Assertion, Reason, Evidence, Linback), so the presenter ( learner in this
context) have to report their identified problem, the conclusion of it, and the way to solve the
problem in short amount of time ( 7 minutes 30 second). After the debate session is done, the
Mr Chair / Adjudicator ( Teacher in this context) wil deliver their conclusion, and decide the
winner. The teacher also obliged to giving feedback to every member the session about what
should they bring, an alternative or effective words, etc, making the imitation method is also
exist on the debate session.
From the explanation above, it is clear that Debate Activity is an optimal way to learn,
drilling, and improving students speaking ability. This is also an interactive way to test the
students ability while obtaining a new vocabularies and the method of delivering speech,
making it an optimal solution to solve the following problem.

b. Relevance Studies

The title of this research is “The Correlation Between English Debate Activity And
Student Speaking Ability” has not conducted yet by the researcher. The study is inspiring by
some previous study such as study entitled :

“Using Debate to Enhance Students` Speaking Ability As Their Character Building”


by Satria Adi Pradana. This research discuss about the terms of debate along with the method
of teaching using debate on the first semester of EFL class. The research also informing about
the benefit and the expectation for the students after learning by using the following method.

“Improving Students Speaking Throught Debate Technique” by Fernandes Arung.


The purpose of this research is to describe the main implementation of debate technique in
teaching speaking and to identify how much the students speaking skill improvement after
being taught by using debate technique. The research itself divided into 2 cycle, before the
implementation of debate and after it, and the subject of it were 29 students of SMA Negeri 1
Lasusua IPA XI/2 Class. The result shown that by using debate technique could improve the
speaking ability, this proof by the increasing of students average score that at first cycle was
64 and increased into 78,4 on the second cycle.

“Developing Speaking Skill Throught Debating : Undergraduate EFL Students


Perception ” by Syamdianita and Amedea Cathriona Maharia. This study aimed precisely for
answering two research question named “How is the undergraduate EFL students' perception
about debate in speaking class?” and “How do the undergraduate EFL students believe that
debate can help them to improve their speaking skill?”. The research is conducted by using
mixed method of Interview and Questionare as the guide instrument. The subject of the
research were 63 Students of 5th semester of English Departement, The first result of the
study showed students had positive perception toward the use of debate in speaking class
because of some benefits they acquired. They could practice the elements and components of
speaking well and be more confident to deliver their ideas. The second result of the study
showed that students’ perceived debate could help them to improve their speaking skill
particularly the components of speaking (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency and
comprehension). However, during the interview sessions, some grammatical errors could still
be found.

“The Use of Debate Technique in Increasing Students’ Speaking Ability (Pre


Experimental Research at the Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Pallangga" by Try
Hermawan. The study is aimed for finding the increasing students speaking ability by using
the method of debate technique focusing in term of vocabulary & pronouncation. The
research using the British Parlementary method of debating, pre-test treatment, and post-test
design. This research also collecting data by giving pre-test and post-test to the subject, XI
IPA 2 students of SMA Negeri 1 Pallangga. The result shown the increasing the speaking
ability by the prove of Mean score of pre-test was 61. It classified as fair categorized, post-
test was 74,73. The improvement of pre-test to be post-test was 22,51%. Which is indicating
the improvement of students speaking ability in terms of pronouncation & Vocabulary.

“ Students` Perception on The Use of Debate Activities in Improving Students`


Speaking Skill in SMAN 8 Yogyakarta” by Astri Wulansari. This researcher is intender to
find out students perception on the use of debate activies in improving students speaking
skill. The research is conducted from two research question, “ What is the eleventh grade
students perception on the use of debate to improve students speaking skill?’ and “ What
extent do debate activity help students to improve their speaking skills?”. This research using
the conducted observation, distributed questionare, and conducted interview as the subject are
8 members of Debate extraculicular in SMAN 8 Yogyakarta. The study found that students
had a positive perception on the use of debate to improving speaking skill, it is proven by the
response from all of the subject shown 62.5% Strongly Agree and 37.5% Agree that Debate
helped them to improve their speaking skill. Also, all of the subject agreed that debate helped
them to discover a new vocabularies by the percentage 25% Strongly Agree and 75% Agree.
Moreover the students realized that the implementation of debate not only helped them to
improve their attitude while speaking, but it is also gave many advantage in improving their
speaking skills.

C. RESEARCH QUESTION

Based on the problem in introduction of study which had been identified and limited,
the researcher formulates a research question for the problem as follows:
Is there any correlation between the English Debate Activity with Improving Students
Speaking Ability?

D. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The research method used in this research is qualitative method with case study as its
design .Creswell (2009) stated that qualitative is a means for exploring and understanding the
meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem. The process of research
involves emerging questions and procedures, data typically collected in the participant’s
setting, data analysis, inductively building from particulars to general themes, and the
researcher making interpretations of the meaning of the data. The final written report has a
flexible structure.

Made (2020) stated that in his book case study is a research design that aimed to
obtain the clear information about the case that being researched. Study case is being held by
gathering varian of information and processed in order to resolve the following problem.

This research will be conduct in the phrase or cycle for gathering data, the first cycle
will be at the beginning of the learning session that being held by UKM Bahasa. The students
will be tasked to answer a question related to the students speaking skills and the English
debate. The second cycle will be conducted at the end of the session, the students will be
tasked to answer the following question about what are students feel about their speaking
skills after completing the session. This will make the research conducted with the
Quesstionare method in order to find the correlation between the increasing of students
speaking skills after completing the English debate session.
