CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH

2
WHAT IS CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH?

A quantitative method of research in which you have 2

or more quantitative variables from the same group
of subjects, & you are trying to determine if there is a
relationship (or covariation) between the 2 variables.

3
Theoretically, any two quantitative variables can be
correlated as long as you have scores on these variables
from the same participants.

4
RESEARCH SAMPLE

1. The correlation between English grammar

competence and speaking fluency

2. The correlation between students’ reading habit and

their ability of writing narrative text

5
CHARACTERISTICS

1. At least two variables

2. The variables should be something that can

measured

3. No manipulation or treatment

6
Data Collecting Technique

1. Test
2. Interview
3. Observation
4. Questionnaire
5. Documentation

7
Subjects

Randomized
Should be no less than 30
Only one group

8
Results

Directions:

9
Positive Correlation

▪ The value of the first variable

increases; the value of the
second variable also increases

▪ The value of the first variable

decreases; the value of the
second variable also decreases

10
Negative Correlation

▪ The value of the first variable

increases; the value of the second
variable decreases

▪ The value of the first variable

decreases; the value of the second
variable increases

11
PURPOSE

▪ TO MAKE A PREDICTION about one variable based on

what we know about another variable

12
GOALS

Looking at the degree of relationship between variables
