Topic:
PowerGeneration FromWaste
Of IC Engine
(Thesis Summary)

2
Problems:
• A significant amount of fuel energy is wasted in the
form of heat.(Poor fuel to performance ratio)
• Emission of CO,HC and NOx

Aim:
• Recovery of wasted heat through exhaust and coolant to
maintain the temperature of intake air (60-70C) and
Engine and to reduce the Engine load.

3
Methodology
For waste heat recovery two harvesting systems will be used.
• Waste Energy Harvesting System from coolant (WeHSc)
• Waste Energy Harvesting system from Exhaust (WeHSex)
1. Fuzzy adaptive control Micro facet exhaust gas recirculation
(MiF-EGR)
2. Thermal electric generator (TEG)

4
WeHSc
• A coolant jacket is connected to the intake manifold and
small-scale supercharger with the help of metal pipe.
• The hot coolant from the engine flow into the coolant
Jacket where it transfers its heat to the freshly inducted
air through the supercharger, thus increases the
temperature of air to 60-70C.
• This is optimum temperature for 90% atomization of
fuel, hence complete combustion take place.
• Reduce CO and HC emission and formation.

5
WeHSex
Fuzzy Adaptive Control Micro Facet Exhaust Gas
Recirculation (MiF-EGR)
• It connects the intake manifold with the exhaust
manifold through a small passage and is controlled by a
fuzzy adaptive controller (FAC)
• The engine intake valve is provide with a thermal
sensor which give feeds to fuzzy adaptive controller to
activate if the intake temperature goes up to 100C.
• As FAC is activated the cooled exhaust gas is allowed
to enter into the intake manifold and it reduce the
temperature of supercharge air to 60-70C Hence
reducing the NOx emission.
• For cooling of exhaust gas in MiF-EGR a thermal fluid
is used duratherm XLT-120 which is capable of
reducing the temperature of exhaust gas from 600 to
20C.

6
WeHSex
Thermo-Electric Generator (TEG)
• The main objective of placing a thermo-electric
generator is to generate electric potential by using the
temperature gradient (difference)
• Two thermoelectric modules (bismuth telluride) will be
used with one side on the exhaust pipe and on other side
fines will be attached for cooling collectively this
assembly is called thermoelectric generator,
• Supercapacitor will be used for smooth flow and storage
of voltage (small amount) so this generated voltage will
be used for the operation of different electrical
components
• The load on alternator will be reduce which might
results in up to 10% load reduction on engine. If we
somehow able to reach the temperature difference of
500C the load reduction of engine might reach to 20%.

7
Conclusion
• It is concluded that by the application of WeHSc and
WeHSex we can achieve up-to 90% of fuel vaporization
and atomization so the fuel will combust completely
and results in the 3% enhancement of fuel consumption
and the engine will develop more power as compare to
natural aspirated engine, the results shows that the brake
power of the engine is improve about 7%.
• The emission of CO, NOx and HC has been controlled
• The 10% load of the alternator is reduced by the
application of Thermoelectric Generator (TEG).
