SPACE PLANNING

Site Plan - LONE Hotel

5
Ground Floor - LONE Hotel

The site’s complex terrain with dramatic altitude changes determined the
locations of internal facility spaces through a dynamic interweaving of public
areas and guest suites at all levels. The specific Y shaped ground plan enabled
the following: a rational & functional organizational scheme, quality views
from all rooms, and the grouping of public facilities around a central vertical
lobby.

Side Elevation showing Hull like Structure

The hotel’s identity is recognized through the external design of the building,
with a facade that is defined by dominant horizontal lines – terrace guards
designed to evoke the image of slanted boat decks. The building’s floor plates
contract from level to level going up, creating an elevation that is tapered at
all angles.

• VALIDITY And OBJECTIVE Of CASE STUDY

Ahmedabad hotel was chosen as a case study because of the dynamic

design principle involved. It was also taken to imply the fact that such
designs are not only conceived but also implemented in India.

• Immedite Site Context

• DEVELOPMENT Of FORM

On the lower three floors the proposal consists of reception lobby, shopping
area, banquet hall, meeting rooms, restaurants, lounge space and service
areas. All these elements are tied with a coherent design language of natural
canyon like formations. The spaces are carved out using the same design
principles with which a wave carves out a canyon.

• Space Planning

The building comprises of three

waves which are very carefully
translated into dramatic key spaces
on the lower floors and on the
upper floors they translate into
room grids with focus on
standardized room sizes.

These waves emerge effortlessly from the landscape creating a

sense of harmonic
relationship with the ground. The entry to the building has been
marked with a column less cantilever that creates a dramatic 9
entrance space.

The different functions in the building with different programmatic

requirements are blending together thus resulting in this iconic building.
The profile of the building has been designed with keen emphasis given
both to the smooth transition from the horizontal landscape to the
vertical structure and to the standardization and repetition of the façade
components.

The profile of the building has been designed with keen emphasis given both
to the smooth transition from the horizontal landscape to the vertical building
and to the standardization and repetition of the façade components.

The façade is designed as an intricate part of the building.

The interdependent relationship between the skin and structure of
the building makes the system a very coherent one.

2.3.: THE LALIT, NEW DELHI

The Lalit New Delhi is a 5-star deluxe hotel in the heart of the business and
commercial district of Connaught place. The hotel has an adjoining WTC in the
complex which houses offices. It is a 460 room 5 star hotel with business as
well as convention facilities.

Site Planning
The complex consists of the hotel building, world trade centre building and
the world trade tower building. The WTC is located adjoining to the Lalit,
whereas the WTT is entirely segregated. All the 3 buildings have separate
entries and the Lalit having one guest and one service entry.

13
Site zoning
Ground Floor Zoning

In the case of the Lalit,

there is one drop-off for
the entire hotel and the
lobby acts as the central
space. All the functions
are centralised around the
lobby which enhances the
guest as well as staff
circulation. Separate
service entry has been
provided on the ground
floor with a service lobby.

Section

From the section, it is clear that with increasing height, the guestrooms
become more premium. Here, all the services and engineering facilities have
been located in the second basement. The first basement has been utilized
14
for providing banquet halls.
Guestrooms
The Lalit hosts a variety of guestroom typologies which include deluxe
rooms, view rooms, business suites, executive suites, luxury suites, indian
suites, club suites and the presidential suite. Below are shown some of the
room typologies:

Office Towers
The complex has two office towers, one is the world trade centre building
and the other is the world trade tower building. The area distribution of
the office towers is as follows:

WTC Plan WTT plan 15

WTC:
1 Large office: 700 m2
1 Medium office: 200 m2
2 Small offices: 150 x 2 = 300 m2
Total office space = 1100 m2
WTT:
1 Large office: 400 m2
2 Medium office: 250 m2
Total office space = 900 m2C
Both the office towers have a common lobby space and the WTC has an
atrium which provides ample daylight during the working hours. However,
the cores are not centrally planned which reduces efficiency in circulation for
all the offices.
Inferences:
• Separate entries for the Lalit, WTC and WTT but have a common
basement.
• The hotel features 8 different types of room typologies distributed in
three different towers.
• More premium rooms are located in the upper levels.
• The room standard and rate rises with rising height.
• All the public functions are centrally located around the lobby.
• Banquets are located in the basement and services in lower basement.
• The cores in the office towers are not centrally planned which reduces
efficiency in
• circulation for all the offices.
