VALVE INSPECTION AND

TEST
Presented
By
RITESH KUMAR
JE(NQA),QAE(WP/WE),KOLKATA
SCOPE
•Covers inspection and pressure test requirements for valves such as:
Gate valve , Check valve, Plug valve, Ball type valve, Butterfly valve etc.

• This standard may be used to other types of valves when it is

specified in the individual valve standards and subjected to
agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser if not
specified in individual valve standards.
INSPECTION
• Inspection at manufacturer’s plant
It’s specified in Purchase order(PO) ,it shall be done at
manufacturer’s plant. All reasonable facilities shall be given to the
inspector for satisfying himself.

• Inspection outside Manufacturer’s Plant

It’s specified in the purchase order(PO), it shall be done at other
than manufactrure’s plant.
EXTENT OF INSPECTION
Pouring Witness
•Pouring of molten metal in to the mould
• Punch inspector’s seal and heat no on metal strip
• Metal strip is dipped into the mould
• Inspector carries out test piece for chemical and mechanical testing

Stamp Transfer
• Cut out metal strip which previously dipped during metal pouring
• Punch inspector’s seal and heat no. on respective items
• Stamp transfer done mainly to recognise further when other type of inspection to be done
Visual inspection and Dimensional check of the valve component

The butterfly valve consists of only

four main components:
body, disk, stem and seat
•Dimension check is done on the basis of GA drawing and part drawing.

•Unspecified tollerance : As per IS 2102(part1)

Dye Penetration Testing

3 Types of liquid spray used for DPT

•Spray cleaner on machined surface and wipe with dry cotton.

•Spray penetrant on those surfaces and after 05 minutes wipe with dry cloth

•Spray developer on the exposed surfaces .if any crack present on those surface penetrant spread and
crack is eaisly visible

Pressure Cum seat leak test of valve

Specification: BS 6755

Time duration of test vary on nominal bore size

SETUP
•Mounted on the test Bench
•Hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure setup

Hydrostatic Pressure Test

For Body:
•Pressure-20 Bar
•valve should be open
•Clean the valve with dry cotton and check leakage by using hand

For Seat : Pressure-15 Bar

valve should be closed
Clean the valve with cotton and see the leakage
Pneumatic Pressure Test
For Seat:
•Pressure-7 Bar
•valve should be closed
• water is to be given on the disk and soap solution
given on the side contact
Painting and Packaging
It is the last process before the valve is cleared for dispatch.
Packaging contains the following deatails:
•The life of preservation
•Any periodic inspection or maintenance required
•Storage requirement in warehouse
•Use before, in case of items with self life

Issue I-note
I-note will be issued only after all inspection have been completed including that of
documentation preservation and packaging.
