INTRODUCTION
• Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new
solid-state joining process. This joining technique
is energy efficient, environment friendly, and
versatile.
• FSW capable of producing very high strength
welds in wide range of materials at lower cost.
• FSW process takes place in the solid phase
below the melting point of the materials to be
joined. • Rotating probe provides
• Material Suitability: Copper, Titanium, Zinc, Mild friction heat and
steel, Stainless steel, Nickel alloys pressure which joins the
material Sufficient
downward force to
maintain
pressure and to create
friction heat.
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF FSW
• FSW a cylindrical, shouldered tool with a profiled probe is rotated
and slowly plunged into the joint line between two pieces butted
together.
•This heat is without reaching the melting point and allows traversing
APPLICATIONS
• FSW is mostly used in aircraft industries for welding wings, fuel tanks, aircraft structure
etc. Used in marine industries for structure work.
• Used in automotive industries to weld wheel rims, chassis, fuel tanks and other structure
work.
ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE
• Good mechanical properties as in weld
condition
• Work pieces must be rigidly
clamped.
• Improved safety due to absence of toxic
smoke • Slower traverse rate than fusion
welding.
• No consumables
