1.STUDY OF URBAN MICRO-CLIMATE AND VERTICAL FARMING; AND
REDESIGN OF KOYAMBEDU FLOWER MARKET.
AIM:
The aim is to create a wholistic commercial hub with vertical farming.

OBJECTIVE:
• The main focus is to understand outdoor thermal comfort and air quality in semi open space and also the effect of
microclimate in market complex.
• And also addresses the contribution of street design toward the development of a comfortable microclimate at street
level for pedestrians.
• Street geometries are studied, including various aspect ratios, i.e. height-to-width ratio H/W, solar orientations.
• Merits and de-merits of Decentralisation.
• Effects of open spaces, semi open spaces, trees, textured façades with the aspect ratio and solar orientation.
• Studying the impacts of unsatisfactory quality of life in general in the CBD.
• Merits and de-merits of decentralization.
METHODOLOGY:
LITRATURE STUDY:
1.USING MICROCLIMATIC LANDSCAPE DESIGN TO CREATE THERMAL COMFORT AND ENERGY
EFFICIENCY,T. Panagopoulos
The strong relationship between microclimatic and comfort conditions demonstrate that careful design can allow for
CONCLUSION: the use of open spaces, balancing exposure and protection to the different climatic elements. However, this can only
be feasible if great care is taken to include microclimatic concerns at the design phase.
2. Effect of urban design on microclimate and thermal comfort outdoors in warm-humid ,Tanzania (Moohammed
Wasim Yahia, Erik Johansson, Sofia Thorsson, Fredrik Lindberg, Maria Isabel)
The study illustrated that the areas with low-rise buildings lead to more stressful urban spaces than the areas with highrise
buildings. The study showed that the compact urban morphologies reduced the time of solar exposure and also reduced the
amount of direct solar radiation which reached the ground surface.

3.Bioclimatic rehabilitation of an open market place by a computational fluid dynamics simulation

assessment(Stamatis Zoras, Argyro Dimoudi, Vasilis Evagelopoulos)
The significance of roofs, green areas and trees within the open urban complex in relation to the improvement of air
temperature. Relatively high thermal comfort improvement is “easier” to be succeeded if surface thermal exchange. The
exact influence of a bioclimatic intervention to microclimatic parameters must be studied in relation to urban complexity
and climatic zone characteristics.

4.Wind comfort in a public urban space—Case study within Dublin Docklands (Agota Szucs)
The study demonstrates, that wind conditions can be significantly improved by a relatively small intervention, The idea
of studying microclimate in corporates the aim of raising attention to available methods and tools that facilitate planning
with health and comfort in mind. Urban planning decisions including landscape transformation, rejuvenation—all
determine the thermal and aerodynamic conditions, the bioclimatic load users will be exposed to. Therefore the
involvement of all relevant disciplines in the design process, cooperation and communication between various
professionals(architecture, planning, climatology and biometeorology)is therefore of paramount importance.

Pros and cons of the study

Street design toward the development of a
comfortable microclimate at street level for vendors
and pedestrians
Design of comerical complexes and semi open market
space
Special study on urban vertical farming

Vertical farming and housing

Other monetary sources

Self sustainable
community
JUSTIFICATION:
• Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex has
around 3154 shops where vegetable, fruit
and flower is sold.
• one of the largest markets in Asia.
• Approximately one lakh people are visiting
the market complex daily for trading
purpose, subsequently more vehicles are
also entering into the market and it is
expected to increase significantly during
peak festival seasons. Presently, the flower market functions on around 270,520 sqft inside the
Koyambedu Wholesale Market that spreads over 11.25 lakh sq.ft of land.

CMDA have proposed to shift flower market:

“A number of medium and small-scale industrial developments have
come up in the areas zoned for industrial development at
Madhavaram, Vyasarpadi, Kodungaiyur, Ambattur, Noombal, Pammal
and Perungudi. “ stated in CMDA’s Review of the First Master Plan (pg.no:2)

BENEFITS OF DECENTRALIZATION:
The reverse impacts of unsatisfactory quality of life in general in the CBD.
Vehicular traffic will be controlled.
Opportunity to develop self sustainable business district.
