Points, Lines, Shapes, and Designs

Start with two points.

Connect them with a line.
Then make an angle.
Close the angle
And triangle’s there.
Put two triangle’s together
-You’ve got a square!
And squares and triangles
And points and lines
Are the things we use
To make shapes and design!
SHAPES

•Different kinds of shapes are:

-rectangle -square -triangle

-octagon -circle -cylinder

-sphere -cone -disk

-cube -angles
•Shapes is everywhere. Just as you live in a world of numbers, as also live in a world of shapes.
•Your house or apartment is full of shapes.
•Every corner forms a shape called an angle.
•Every door and doorway is a shape called a rectangle.
•The ends of the roof form a shape called a triangle.
•Concrete sidewalks are divided into shapes called squares and triangle.
•A stop sign on the street corner is an eight- sided shape called an octagon.
•A manhole cover on the street looks like a round, flat shape called a circle.
• Coins are kind of disk.
•Round, gleaming soap bubbles that float in the air are shapes called spheres.
•A tin can is called a cylinder.
• An ice cream cone is named for its shape, which is a cone.
Points and Lines- are things we use to make design.
Points:
-it’s a dot, it’s a period, in mathematicians, it’s a point.
-a pint has no length, or width, or thickness, and it has no dimensions.
-have some size and shape.
-
Lines:
-as a row of points.
-has a length, and one dimensions.
-mathematicians think has no width and thickness
every shapes is made up of lines. (triangles, squares, circle)
Triangle tricks

•Triangles are thicky shapes. You can do some surprising things with
them.
Lets make a triangle that you can do some tricks with them. You'll need
a piece of paper about the size of this book, and a scissors.
1. First, fold the paper in half by bringing the top edge down to the bottom
edge.
2. Now, with the folded edge at the top, take thenupper left hand corner
and fold it slantwise toward you, so that the corner is even with the
bottom edge of the ppaper.
3. Crease the fold.
4.Now, unfold the paper.
5. With the scissors, cut along the foldmarks that from the large triangle.
Kinds of Triangles

• Isosceles Triangle

•Right Triangle

•Parallelogram
CREATING DIFFERENT SHAPES USING TRIANGLE

•Move one triangle around until the right angle is at the lower left. move until the
other triangle until the right angle is at the lower right.

•Turn one triangle so that its long side fits against the long side of the other.
• SQUARE- a shape that has four right angles and four sides that all the same
length.

A square Puzzle

• Long ago, there was a farmer whose land was in the shape
of a square. Each side of the square was exactly one
hundered paces long.
• One day, a tired, dusty man knocked on the farmers door
and asked for something to eat. The farmer, being a kind
person, gave the man a nice lunch.
• After the man had eaten, he said, "Farmer, I am your king!
as a reward for your kindness in giving me food when you
thought I was just a humble stranger, you may the double
the size of your land. But when you have added the new

land, farm must still be in the shape of square!".

• The farmer was overjoyed, for now he could plant twice as many
crops. he went out at once to measure his new land so that he could
put a fence around it. But he suddenly found had a problem.
• At first, the doubling of his square of land seemed easy. Since each
sides of the new square should be two hundred paces long-twice the
length of the old sides. But this didn't work. His new square, with sides
two hundred paces long, wasn't twice as big as the square- it was four
times as big! In fact, it contained as much land as four squares with
sides one hundred paces long! 09/03/20
• The farmer has scratched his head. Finally, he went back to
his house and got out paper and pencil. He thought long and
hard. Then he had an idea.
• He would divide his square of land into four square small
squares.
• Then he could simply add on four new squares the same size
as the small ones.
• This way he'd have ecxactly twice the amount of land was in
the old square.
• First, he tried adding all the small squares onto one side of his
old square. But this was no good. It gave him a rectangle, not

a square.
• Then he tried adding two small squares to one
side of the old square and two to another side.
This almost worked. But there was a piece
missing out of one corner, so it wasn't a perfect
square. And if he filled in the missing piece, he
would more than double the size of this farm.

• Again, the farmer scratched his head. Then he had
another idea. he divided his old square into four parts
by drawing diagonal lines between the opposite
corners. Now the square was divided into four
triangles. If he could add four more triangles of exactly
the size- and somehow make a square- he would have
solve the puzzle!
• So he added a triangle to one of the old square.
• Then he added a triangle to another side.
• Then he put triangles on each of the other sides.
