TEACHING
COMPETENCY
STANDARDS IN
SINGAPORE
Competencies are the skills and knowledge that enable
a teacher to be successful. To maximize student
learning, teachers must have expertise in a wide-
ranging array of competencies in an especially
complex environment where hundreds of critical
decisions are required each day (Jackson, 1990). Few
jobs demand the integration of professional judgment
and the proficient use of evidence-based competencies
as does teaching.

Singapore defines a competent teacher as one who is
responsible for molding the future of the nation by preparing
world- and work-ready students, which is critical in today’s
ever-changing global landscape that is marked by rapid
technological advances.

Singapore’s teaching competency standards are grouped into

four major strands. cultivating knowledge (includes subject
mastery, analytical thinking skills, initiative, and using
creative teaching practices), winning hearts and minds,
knowing oneself and others, and working with others.
CERTIFICATION
Certification can be divided into
three main sectors: system, product
and personal certification.
The purpose of certification is to
demonstrate the specified
requirements that needed by an
organization.
WHY CERTIFICATION IS IMPORTANT?
It’s important because it used to get practical skills for the job, and it focuses on the knowledge and
skills needed to carry out work responsibilities in your work destination. to show the maximum
benefit from the field of expertise that has been achieved and to prove that you learn all aspects of a
specific career type while also providing a guaranteed standard of excellence for organizations
related to the career you are looking for. For example, you are hiring a job and it’s a Teacher so you
need Teacher certification.
How Teacher’s certification work in
Singapore?
• Certification is the process of giving certificates to teachers or lecturers. Teacher
certification is also called as teacher licensure. Certification is a form of granting
certificates as formal evidence to teachers or lecturers. The certificate given is an
acknowledgment to the teacher or lecturer as a professional. The certificates
given will be used by teachers to teach students at the elementary, middle and
high school levels. Each country requires teachers to have certificates to work in
public schools. In private schools, teachers who have certificates will be more
interested by schools because teachers are considered to have more competency
than those who do not have certificates. Education is one of the most important
fields in Singapore under strict development procedures. International school
principals offer world-class education from the earliest stages so that people can
easily adapt to global requirements when the time comes.
