Injuries

Definitions:
Bones, Muscles & Joint ● Fracture - a crack or break in the

● Sprains and strains - damage to


soft tissues
- Sprain: Overextending or tearing of
LIGAMENTS
- Strain: Overextending of tearing of
MUSCLES or TENDONS

What you will see
If you have a fracture, dislocation or
sprain/strain you will see:

● Swelling
● Bruising
● Difficulty moving the injured limb
● Pain
Fracture or dislocation
If you are having difficulty moving the
limb or can see obvious misplacement:

● Do not move
● Support the injured part if possible
(elevating by resting on an object,
sling or holding it)
● Arrange to be taken to hospital or
seek assistance from a supervisor
Sprains and strains If you have any swelling, bruising or
pain you should:

● Rest the injury


● Ice - apply a cold compress or ice
pack
● Compress
● Elevate the injured limb
Rest - Stay off the sprained or fractures
bone/joint to allow it to recover
R.I.C.E Method
Ice - This helps minimise the swelling

Compress - This provides support and


increases blood flow leading to a
decrease in swelling. Be aware of
numbness in fingers and toes as these
are signs of the compression being too

Elevate - Bring injury to above heart level.

allowing fluid to drain away from the area

bandage
Practice Time
Some tips:

● Make sure the person is comfortable and tell them


what you're doing
● Avoid covering fingers or toes when bandaging a
limb so you can easily check the circulation
● Apply the bandage firmly, but not tightly.
● As soon as the bandage is on, ask if it feels too tight
and check the circulation by pressing on a fingernail
or a piece of skin until it turns pale. If the colour

does not return straight away, the bandage may be
too tight, so you should loosen it. Limbs can swell up
after an injury, so check the circulation every 10
minutes after you have put the bandage on
