look like?
• Synonym (or repeat context clue): An author
will use more than one word that means the
same thing.

people in Philippines have made a good
business of growing and selling local plants.

• Antonym (or contrast context clue): The text
may include a word or words that have the
opposite meaning, which can reveal the
meaning of an unknown term

• Explanation (or a definition context clue): An
unknown word is explained within the
sentence or in the sentence immediately after.

garden dedicated to the exhibition of trees and
plants.

Native Words
These are the words that are present and used in certain
place but not common in other place.

Example:
My mother loves to eat Puto, a steamed rice cake ,
together with honey.
How does a reader
unlock the
meaning of native
word?
Example:
Read the following passage from “The Ape, the snake
and the lion” and note the words in italic.

Then, Neea'nee went away off to some gardens and


stole a whole lot of ripe paw-paws and bananas, and
brought them to 'Mvoo Laa'na, and said: "Here's plenty
of food for you.
Activity: Read the story entitled “The Ape,
the Snake, and the Lion” in your book on
pages 38-41 and answer the Exercises A and
B in your book on pages 48-49.
