These murex purpurea found off shores of the Mediterranean
and Adriatic seas

These mollusks produce a juice that was formerly used to make

a rich , dark dye called tyrian purple.

Preparation –
The juice secreted by either murex
species is dried and then
triturated with lactose sugar
• GASTROPODA – (Gastro – stomach or belly , pod –
Foot )
• MUREX – murex shell is famous for having huge
variety of ornamentation and sculptured wings .

• PURPLE DYE – the dye is produced as colorless
secretion by gland embedded in the mantle space
of murex spices – the active compound form in
the purple gland of murex is murexine .
• It secretion also contains 5- hydroxytryptamine
(serotonine) which is strongly act on central
nervous system and smooth muscles , serotonine
is important role in determining feeling of
depression or euphoria ,isolation
