HOIST, LIFT AND BEAR

LIFTING, HOISTING AND

RECOLOCATION OF LOADS

• The lifting, hoisting and relocation of loads, manually or with

accessory equipment is frequently associated with serious risks.

• Very common accidents: human and material losses.

• Common injuries: sprains and strains, back injuries, bone injuries,

soft tissue hernias, joint injuries or degeneration…
LIFTING EQUIPMENT
• Machines for hoisting or possibly relocating loads.

• Obligatory regulations (national)

• Operators trained and experienced. Co-workers and pedestrians

informed.

• The hoisting equipment and the hoisting tools must be certified and
regularly inspected. Not using damage equipment or tools.

• Pre-operational checks. Signals.

• Working load may not be exceeded (load limiter, label, plaque), not
at a certain wind speed.
LIFTING EQUIPMENT II
• Communication between the signaler, and the person who attaches
the load and guides it.

• Legally specified inspection intervals are minimum criteria.

• Extreme conditions: specially constructed for such use.

• 4 Principles: Know the weight of the load, handle the load properly,
choose the correct sling and aim for a direct lift.

• Load correctly positioned. Do not leave load unattended.

TACKLES
• Special type of lifting tool. Operated manually.

• Not overloaded can be highly dangerous (maximum load indicated).

Slip-coupling. Pre-operational checking.

• In case of tackles that are operated with a handle, such a handle

may not be extended by using a pipe.

• Never attach tackles to railings, pipes or scaffolding.

• Properly maintained and repaired. Inspected periodically.

HOISTING TOOLS
• Exchangeable and interchangeable equipment that is, for instance,
installed on a crane.

• Hoisting tools are preferably hung up for storage at the location that
is provided for this purpose.

• In a safe condition and regularly inspected by a competent person.

• Pre-operational checkings.

• Each hoisting tool: specific regulations for safe use.

• Types: Chains, steel cables, straps, slings and hoisting belts,

spreader hook and hoisting beam.
CHAINS
• Not overloaded. Never force a chain.

• Certificate, inspected regularly by a competent person

• Apply load to the chain only in the lengthwise direction. Never force
a chain.

• Never use any chains that are damaged, rusted or worn.

• A chain that has been subjected to too heavy loads may no longer
be uses. Replacement.
STEEL CABLES
• Hard core, around which strands of steel wire have been wound.

• Inspected regularly and inspection certificate.

• Maintained in a good state. Well stored.

• Regularly degreased, so that it can be inspected for rust and wear.

Never turn a steel cable into knots.

• Always protect a cable with wooden wedges or an old tyre against

sharp corners. Remove the cable when necessary .

• Preferred.
STRAPS, SLINGS & HOISTING
BELTS
• Pieces of cable or rope, which are provided with a loop at both
ends.

• Identified with a label, which contains the necessary information

about the obligatory inspection. Not overloaded.

• Before using a hoisting belt, the belt must be checked to see if it is

strong enough for the load.

• Attention to sharp corners of the load.

• Check hoisting belts before each use, especially when the belts are
lined. Replaced when necessary.
PALLET TRUCKS
• Vehicle that is suitable for moving pallets. Lifting height of a
maximum of 20 cm. Operated manually or electrically.

• Back straight while pulling a truck, left and right arm alternatevely.
Enough visibility.

• PPE: safety shoes, high visibility clothes, hearing protection, safety

glasses and gloves, helmets.

• Stable load (well-places, not overloading). Sufficient manoeuvring

space.

• Drive over a level surface. Slow speed. No persons.

FORKLIFT TRUCKS
• Vehicle for lifting and moving heavy loads with the help of forks.

• Many countries: drivers special training. Pedestrians especial

careful (informed).

• Forklift truck drivers must have an optimal overview. Distance from

low and high voltage. Not overloaded. Speed limits.

• Passengers may not be carried, unless a special seat. Forbidden to

lift or move persons with a forklift truck, unless special work
containers.

• Parking away from dangerous areas. Refuelling: designated areas.

MANUAL LIFTING
• Always lift with a straight back, bend your knees and avoid twisting
your spine.

• Hold the load as closely as possible to your body.

• Always lift with both hands in front of your body, and preferably do
not lift loads of more than 25 kg.

• The employer is obliged to limit the hazards of manual lifting to a

minimum. Training courses and necessary support equipment.

• Preferably lifting aids or mechanical equipment.

MANUAL LIFTING II
• Special careful with particularly sensitive groups.

• Steps: Identify hazards, risk assesment, control the risks.

• Preventive measures: Plan the lift, plan the route, clear the
destination and adopt safe lifting techniques.

• SMART RULE:
 Size up the load.
 Move close to the load.
 Always bend your knees
 Raise the object.
 Turn with your feet.
