National Rabies Elimination Program in

Bangladesh

About Rabies
• Globally every year estimated 59,000 peoples die of rabies.
• One person die from rabies in every nine minutes of every day among
them 40% are children.
• Highest burden in Asia (56%) and Africa (45%)
• Every year estimated 2000 peoples die of rabies in Bangladesh according
report of WHO,2010.
• Globally Bangladesh ranks third position in the number of human death
from rabies.
• In South Asia, estimated 20,000 and 3000 people die from rabies
respectively in India and China.
Objective
• The Objective of National Rabies Elimination Program is
Rabies free Bangladesh by 2022.

Human rabies Death
1.1 Human rabies death reduce to 280 by june, 2018
1.2 Human rabies death reduce to 70 by 2022
Activities of Rabies Elimination Program
• Strengthening multi-sectoral coordination and collaboration among all
stakeholders
• Updating the National Strategy and budgeted NAP for RE
• Three round campaign of mass dog vaccination will be implemented
in all districs
• Scaling up post exposure prophylaxis to ensure universal access to all
victims
• Awareness building to prevent dog bite specially children
Activities of Rabies Elimination Program
• Establishment of rabies diagnosis center for human ans National
neuroscience and for the animal in the Live stokes department
• Establishment of proper documentation, reporting, data analysis,
feedback and early worning system
• Strengthening of surveillance of rabies and animal exposure
• Capacity building for proper diagnosis and management of animal
bite and rabies cases
• Establishment of a strong system for monitoring, supervision of the
activities and a system of program evaluation
Weak Point of Programme
• Though there is existing reporting system through DHIS-2 ,No
reporting of Rabies cases from Districs level. Thus we does not know
the real number of human rabies death.
• No existing Surveillance system
• No Referance laboratory for diagnosis human rabies
• Lack of National rabies survey and dog survey
• Lack of operational research
