RA 8293 Intellectual Property Code
of the Philippines

“Any person infringing any right


secured by provisions of Part IV [‘The
Law on Copyright’] of this Act or
aiding or abetting such infringement
shall be guilty of a crime."
Punishment
(a) Imprisonment of one (1) year
to three (3) years; fine ranging
from P150,000 to P300,000 for
the first offense
(b) Imprisonment of three (3) years
and one (1) day to six (6) years;
fine ranging from P150,000 to
P500,000 for the second offense

Why do students
plagiarize?
How can students
avoid/get rid of
plagiarism?
Avoid plagiarism thru:
 Paraphrasing -understanding of the source and
stating it in your own words
 Summarizing-overall understanding of the key
idea; only main idea is included
 Quoting – getting the exact words from the
source; speech marks / quotation marks are used
(“…..”);
 Citing of sources- author’s surname and year,
enclosed in parenthesis, written at the start, middle,
or end of the sentence; with page numbers if there
are quoted parts in the sentence
Paraphrasing
“Paraphrasing is a restatement in your
own words of someone else's ideas.”
(Turnitin, LLC., 2017).

 
How do you paraphrase?
 According to Academic English UK (n.d.),
• 1.Highlight important words / key terms (words that
cannot be changed).
• 2.Find synonyms / alternatives for words that
can be changed.
• 3.Change the grammar: active to passive, nouns to verbs,
adjectives to adverbs, etc., and change the word order.
• 4.Check the meaning.

Changing Nouns to Verbs

Changing Verbs to Nouns

Changing Adverbs to Adjectives

1. He wrote frequently.

Changing Active Verbs to Passive
1. We can relate a study of this kind to texts of
other media.
A study of this kind can be related to texts of
other media.
2. The teacher uses a variety of techniques to
elicit what the students already know about the
