Active and Passive Voice
VOICE OF THE VERB
Voices of the verb
focuses on the function of the subject being either
the doer/performer or the receiver of the action.
They are classified as to: (a) active and (b) passive.
ACTIVE voice occurs when the subject of the
sentence acts as the performer of doer of the action
while PASSIVE voice indicated that the subject of
the sentence is the receiver of the action. Though it
is not always present, the doer of the action in
passive voice is introduced by the preposition by.
The cat ate the mouse.

The mouse was eaten by


the cat.

The savannah is
roamed by
beautiful giraffes.
Sue changed

Developing
mastery:
Task: Read and analyse the
sentences whether the verb is in the
active or passive voice. Draw a heart
if it is active voice and star if passive
voice.

Learning Task: Identify the voice of the verb in the following sentences. Draw a smiling
face  if the voice of the verb in the sentence is in the ACTIVE voice, draw a sun ☼ if
the voice of the verb is in the PASSIVE voice.
