THE MOST ESSENTIAL
LEARNING COMPETENCIES (MELCs) ...
are learning competencies
merged or clustered into one
comprehensive
learning competency ..
Competencies
are combinations
of knowledge, skills and attitudes
that students develop and apply for
successful learning, living and
working. They emphasize aspects
of learning that apply within and
across all subject areas.
Learning competencies are the
main ideas or skills you expect
students to master (these are also
called “goals”) We expect there to
be 3-6 of these for each credit hour
of instruction. Examples: 1. Provide
a morphologic diagnosis given a
gross tissue specimen of the liver.
DepEd revises curriculum for school year
2020-2021
AMID the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department of Education
(DepEd) decided to streamline its learning competencies for
school year 2020-2021.
Jimenez said in order to guide DepEd on how to continue with education
while taking into consideration the safety and health of the learners,
teachers and their personnel, they developed the Learning Continuity Plan
(LCP).
He also said that for private schools, it does not follow that if using online or blended mode
of learning, the tuition will be discounted.
He said under the “Sulong EduKalidad,” DepEd’s battle cry moving forward, the K to 12
curriculum review and update is one of its reform areas.
He said: “That’s what we’re prioritizing now amid this crisis. We tried to find a solution
that’s suitable for these challenging times. It would be difficult for us to go all the way since
we’ll be using different modalities in the delivery of instructions and lessons.”
DepEd has announced that classes for school year 2020-2021 will start on August 24, but
students do not have to report physically.
While the streamlined curriculum will be used this school year, Jimenez said this will still be
subject for review in the coming years. (WBS)

There are four key steps to unpacking standards:

Impotance of Unpacking MELC
By unpacking this standard, you now have a
clear path forward. This process will enable you to
plan effectively and ultimately save you time to
focus on your students. Not only will you have a
deeper understanding of the standards you teach,
but your students will be more engaged in
their learning
