Technology and machine overview

Optical Coherence Tomography
Company Introduction
• ZEISS is one of the world’s leading suppliers of medical devices
in the field of medical technology. It supplies innovative
technologies and application-oriented solutions for
ophthalmology and microsurgery designed to help doctors
improve the quality of life of their patients.

• ZEISS provides complete packages of solutions for diagnosis

and devices for optical coherence tomography (OCT),
perimetry, optical biometry and slit lamps. For the treatment
of eye diseases ZEISS also offers not only ophthalmologic
surgical microscopes, but also implants (intraocular lenses |
IOLs) and consumables like ophthalmic viscosurgical devices
(OVDs).

Optical Coherence Tomography
• Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a Non-Invasive, Non-
Contact, trans-pupillary imaging technology.

• This technology images retinal structures in vivo (within the

living body) with a resolution of 5 – 17 microns, technology
based.

• The OCT´s utilize coherence-domain reflectometry and the

coherence property of light.

• Scan resolution is not limited by pupil size or by scattering of

the light within the media.

The 4 properties of light waves
1. Intensity --- The amplitude or height of the wave.

2. Wavelength --- The physical length of the wave.

Wavelength determines the color of light.

3. Phase --- The fraction of a wave as measured

from a specific point or time.

4. Polarization --- The Axial orientation of the wave.

Usually expressed as horizontal or vertical.
Tomography vs. Topography
• Tomographic images are cross-sectional scans through
tissue, revealing the underlying structure not directly
observable.
• 2 Dimensional viewing via cross-sectioning.

• Topographic images show contour changes of a surface

only and do not immediately relay information of the
underlying structures.
• 2 Dimensional viewing via the surface.

Live OCT Fundus Technology
• Cirrus OCT – Model 400 and 500 use the OCT scan to
generate a Fundus Image, called „Live OCT Fundus
Technology“
Cirrus OCT Fudus Imaging – Model 4000/5000

• Cirrus OCT – Model 4000 and 5000 utilize an integrated

subsystem , called „Line Scanning Laser
Ophthalmoscope“ in order to generate a high quality

Database Problems
First Checks:
When did the problem first appear?
Is there an Archive connected?
Does the instrument have a DICOM
or LOCAL database?
Database solution

Create a new database

Restore old database from Archive
Perform Database Backup/Restore,
using Ibconsole
Perform Import and Export
