Is the Ideal Gas Law applicable to

saturated steam?
Based on the graph shown, pressures below 10 KPa or 0.001 Mpa, water vaper can
be treated as an ideal gas, regardless of it’s temperature it has a percentage error
below 0.1%. However the concepts of the ideal gas still apply but varied from the
simple concepts known.
Compressibility Factor- It is the thermodynamic property for
modifying the ideal gas law to account for behavior of real
gases. Denoted as (Z)
P PV m P T
Z  actual  Preduced  Treduced 
Pideal R 0T Pcritical Tcritical

It is a function of reduced pressure where both functions

determine if the ideal gas law is applicable to the gas.
It is applicable if 0.3456
Tr  1.819 
Z = 1.0 for 0.10 percent error 0.1 < Pr < 7 if Pr0.6
Pr < 0.1
