STANDARD TABLE OF WEIGHTS

AND MEASURES
• Competency: Familiarize
oneself with the table of
weights and measures in
baking
• Objective/Subtask: Identify
and apply the standard table
of weights and measures in
baking
Before we proceed, let us have a review on abbreviations
of measurement by having this activity.

• Write the abbreviation for each unit of measure.

1.Cup - _____ c

ft
6. Kilogram – _____
kg
7. Pound – _____lb

Sample problem:
How many egg yolks are there in 4 cups?

a.Identify what is given: (based on our table)

4 cups
12 egg yolks is equal to 1 cup

b.What is required?
The number of egg yolks in 4 cups.
c. Solve by writing an equation in proportion.

A proportion is simply a statement that two ratios

are equal. It can be written in two ways: as two
equal fractions a/b = c/d; or using a colon, a:b = c:d.

Ratio is the relationship between two

numbers using the colon (:) symbol e.g.
12:1
c. Solve by writing an equation in proportion.

12:1 = X:4 wherein, X is the unknown value in the

equation
12 egg yolks : 1 cup = X (unknown value of egg yolks) :
4 cups
The symbol : (colon) is read as is to which also means
equal.
This equation in proportion shows that two ratios are
equal such that 12:1 is equal to X:4.
d. Then cross multiply.

e. Therefore, there are 48 egg yolks in 4 cups.

Let’s have some examples!

1.) 1 cup = __ T

1 cup : x = 1/8 cup : 2 T

1/8x = 2 x = 16 T
1/8 1/8
Let’s have some examples!

1.) 6 T = __ c

6T : x = 2 T : 1/8 c

2x = 3/4
x = 3/8 or 0.375 T
2 2
Let’s have some examples!

1.) 5 tbsp. = __ tsp.

5T: x = 1T : 3t

1x = 15
x = 15 t
1 1
