SDM templates

We use Switch Database Management (SDM) templates in Cisco Catalyst switches in

order to optimize the switch resources. By default, the switch SDM template is
“default”; which means that the switch’s resources are balanced.

Depending on the need, you should configure the appropriate template in the switch.
For instance, you can configure a SDM template for vlan; this would optimize the
switch for maximum VLAN support

Common SDM Templates

The following SDM templates are available in most Cisco Catalyst 3700 series switches:

1. default - (Balances resources)

2. access - for lots of Access Control List (ACL)
3. dual-ipv4-and-ipv6 – supports both IPv4 & IPv6 dual stack environments
4. routing – to maximize routing
5. vlan - to maximize VLANs

How to configure SDM Templates

In order to configure SDM templates, we would:

1. View the current SDM settings:
switch#show sdm prefer

2. Go in to configuration mode:
switch#configure terminal

3.Specify a SDM template to use with the following command:

Switch(configure)#sdm prefer ?

Video Summary

In today’s lecture, we covered SDM templates commonly found in most Cisco Catalyst switches.
First we looked at why we would prefer one SDM template over another. Following this, we saw
a list of SDM templates which we can choose from depending on the need. Finally, we
implemented various SDM templates, the SDM templates vary depending on the Cisco switch’s
platform.

We move on to managing MAC address tables. We will look at ways of viewing and optimizing
the CAM table.
