Meaning:
A rope stretched along the length of the diagonal (of a square)
produces an area which the vertical and horizontal sides make
together.
a +b =c
2 2 2
Rule : a2 + b2 = c2
= 3 2 + 42 = 5 2
= 9 + 16 = 25
Practical uses of the
Pythagorean theorem
› Construction
• Building steps, ramps etc.,
› To locate GPS coordinates
› To find the type of a triangle
• right-angled c2 = a2 + b2
• acute-angled c2 < a2 + b2
• obtuse-angled c2 > a2 + b2
› To measure screen size of mobile, laptops,
tv, etc.
› To find the length of the ladder needed to
climb till a particular height.
Activity Proof:
a2 + b2 = c2
13.55 inch
√243.19 = 15.6 (app.)
Eg. The screen size of the above laptop is measured as 15.6 inch,
rather than 13.55 × 7.62 inches.
The craft I made to prove Pythagoras'
theorem
Conclusion:
a2 + b 2 = c2
