SOCIAL MEDIA
What is Social Media? How does this affect our lives in the
present? How big is this currently? According to research, social media
is a term used to describe applications and websites that allow its
users to communicate, interact, collaborate, and share content with
one another. In simple words, social media enables us to virtually
interact with those around us. These applications most especially give
importance to communication and interaction, allowing us to connect
with someone who may be far away.

Types and Examples of Social Media:

The types and examples within social
media include the following:

1. Social Networking – Social networking

sites and applications help users connect
with family, friends, and businesses. It
allows users to share
thoughts, feelings, upload content (i.e. photos, videos, and music). That
being said, this type focuses on the user and the business. These help
businesses by providing a platform to easily and directly reach their customers
for advertisements and other important business-related data. Examples of
these include Facebook, Twitter, etc.

2. Social Review sites – These social media sites allow for interactions
between the customer and the business by providing reviews and ratings of the
business. These include sites such as Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc.

3. Image sharing sites – Image sharing sites and applications allow for the
sharing of images, illustrations, infographics, and more; which spark
communication These include sites such as Instagram, Snapchat, etc.

4. Video hosting sites – Sharing media in the form

6. Discussion Sites – These sites focus on the ability of the user to strike a
conversation and ask questions. By this, users can freely communicate and
share each one’s knowledge and insights. Examples of these include Reddit

need something to find people who can provide those needs. This type of social

Uses, Advantages, and Disadvantages of Social

Media:
Mainly, Social media is used for
communication. Social media provides a platform
and tool for people to communicate and interact with
one another online. This also allows the
communication of information, emotions, and
opinions within society. Second, social media is
used to make collaboration.
within a group easier and more convenient. This helps people become
more productive and mitigates the stress brought to people by physical
collaborations. Third, social media also provides a medium to share media
such as photos, videos, illustrations, and many more. This helps one to
express oneself with confidence and helps that confidence reach more
people. Other than this, it also is used to provide entertainment in the form
of videos and online games. Lastly, Social media is used in building small
and big businesses alike. In business, social media provides them with
many benefits, such as a medium for reviews, surveys, advertising, and
brand monitoring. That being said, it can be seen that for entrepreneurs,
social media is one way to build up their business as it easily connects
them to their target market and possible customers.
Despite the many uses of social media, it
also has its pros and cons. Advantages in
social media include the broadening of the
capabilities of education, global
communication, online marketing and
businesses, and fast news reporting.
On the other hand, the use of social media also has its disadvantages.
One of the biggest problems revolving around social media and the
internet is online privacy protection. Because of its virtual nature,
people can easily get scammed and can get harmed by many illegal
ways involving privacy. Besides this, social media platforms are also
the roots of cyber bullying, which affects many social media users
today. This causes harm to one’s mental health and can even cause
problems such as suicide. Another disadvantage is addiction. Many
young teenagers and adults’ lives revolve around social media. This
changes lifestyle habits which can harmfully affect the health of the
user and those around them. Lastly, in line with addiction, social media
also limits a person’s physical connection and interactions with society.

On the extreme, it can even change a person’s

perception and view towards life, leading to a
change in personality that affects the current
relations of a person. Based on the facts
stated about social media, we must learn to
keep a balance with this and our personal life
to maximize its use without causing harm to
ourselves.

Though, social networking and

other types too, as mentioned above. To

Due to the high amounts of social media apps coming and going, people
gain and loose accounts more and more every so often. As you join/participate
new social media accounts, the more accounts you get. This is because
accounts from different application and websites do not overlap. Having many
accounts can lead to struggles in maintaining and remembering information,
such as passwords. However, companies like Google, now prioritize 1 account to
be use by a user on many different websites/apps of social media, which makes
it easier for the user to maintain. In figure 4. above, it can be seen that the
average amount of accounts per internet user has dropped
from 2019 (Average of 10.4 accounts) to 2020 (Average of 9.9 accounts). This
could be the effect of what companies such as Google are doing to lessen the
hassle of managing many accounts. Despite this, it can be observed that the
average did not drop very much, as this could also be caused by the
disappearance of some social media websites/apps within the span of 2019-2020.
Lastly, the final common behavior of
Filipino social media users is the personal
purpose for social media. It has been
