The Equation That Gave

Birth to The Atomic Bomb

- Zaki
Mass Energy Equivalence

The equation that he came For Einstein, mass became a way

up with, simply states that to measure the total energy present
the energy in any system, is in an object. That mass is simply a
equal to its mass multiplied super-concentrated form of energy.
by the square of the speed of
light

This new form of energy is called rest energy, where particles

have energy simply because of its mass. Compared to other forms
of energy, it is much more concentrated

The reason with c being the speed of light, is because energy travels
at the speed of light, an example would be when we split a uranium
atom in a nuclear power plant. But why squared? This is because
kinetic energy is proportional to mass and if you accelerate an
object, the kinetic energy increases to the tune of the speed squared.
Nuclear Fission

This idea is used in nuclear power stations,

where neutrons are blasted to the nuclei of
uranium atoms, causing them to split into
smaller atoms, this process, called nuclear
fission releases energy and more neutrons that
split up even more uranium atoms.

This is where e=mc^2 comes in, the mass difference of the

uranium atoms as it is bombarded with neutrons corresponds
with the energy released. This is the process that powers up
an ordinary atomic bomb, the fact that the mass is multiplied
by the square of the speed of light, which is a HUGE
number, shows just how much energy there is in tiny
amounts of matter.

This led to more technological advances such as the atomic

bomb as discussed, nuclear power, nuclear medicine and so
on
