Environmental Pollution

What Is Pollution ?
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants
into the natural environment that cause
adverse change.
Pollution can take the form of chemical
substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light.
Pollutants, the components of pollution,
can be either foreign substances/energies
or naturally occurring contaminants.
What Are Their Effects ?
Pollution effects are indeed many and
wide-ranging.
There is no doubt that excessive levels of
pollution are causing a lot of damage to human
and animal health, tropical rainforests,
as well as the
wider environment.
Effects Continued......

The effects in living organisms may

range from mild discomfort
to serious diseases such
as cancer to physical deformities
Pollution causes not only physical disabilities
but also psychological
and behavioral disorders in people.
Types Of Pollution :
 Air Pollution
 Water Pollution
 Soil Pollution
 Noise Pollution
 Radioactive Pollution
 GreenHouse Effect
Air Pollution :
Air pollution is the introduction of
particulates, biological molecules, or other
harmful materials into Earth's atmosphere,
causing disease, death to humans, damage
to other living organisms such as food crops, or the
natural or built environment. Air pollution
may come from anthropogenic or natural sources
Effects Of Air Pollution :
 Respiratory and heart problems
 Global warming
 Acid Rain
 Eutrophication
 Effect on Wildlife
 Depletion of Ozone layer
Solution For Air Pollution :
 Conserve energy
 Use public mode of transportation
 Understand the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
 Emphasis on clean energy resources
 Use energy efficient devices
Water Pollution :
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers
and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are
directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove
harmful compounds.
Water pollution affects the entire biosphere – plants and organisms living in these
bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species
and population, but also to the natural biological communities.
Effects Of Water Pollution :

 Human Health
 Contaminated Drinking Water
 Adverse Effect On Ecosystem
 Birth Of Deadly Pathogen
 Death of Animal
Control of Water pollution
 Sewage treatment
 Industrial wastewater treatment
 Agricultural wastewater treatment
 Erosion and sediment control from construction sites
 Control of urban runoff
Soil Pollution :
Soil contamination or Soil pollution is caused by the presence of xenobiotic (human-
made) chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil environment. It is typically caused
by industrial activity, agricultural chemicals, or improper disposal of waste.he most
common chemicals involved are petroleum hydrocarbons, polynuclear aromatic
hydrocarbons (such as naphthalene and benzo(a)pyrene), solvents, pesticides, lead, and
other heavy metals.
Causes of Soil Pollution

 Industrial Activity
 Agricultural Activities
 Waste Disposal
 Accidental Oil Spills
 Acid Rain
Effects of Soil Pollution :

 Effect on Health of Humans

 Effect on Growth of Plants
 Decreased Soil Fertility
 Toxic Dust
 Changes in Soil Structure
