Improved toughness of

polypropylene/wollastonite
composites
Objective
• The main idea of this project is to reengineered the thermoplastic for a better
performance in the term of its mechanical properties

• Tensile Strength

• Elongation At Break

• Impact Strength
polypropylene
• Polypropylene (PP) is the polymer of choice for many home appliances,
packaging, and the automotive industry due to its mechanical properties,
amenability to processing, low cost, and affinity for numerous types of
filler
Wollastonite
• Overall, wollastonite has become a more common filler alternative to talc
or glass fiber. Its properties have made it useful for reinforcing PE and
especially PP, for applications such as automotive panels and housings,
door handles, and appliances.
Procedure of Analysing
• The mean diameter of the filler is set up for 6µm and the specific surface area, determined using Brunauer-
Emmett-Teller theory, 1.6m2 /g.
• Modified the wollastonite filler by loading it into the chamber of a Henschel blender with stearic acid at 1.5
parts per hundred.
• ZSK30 Werner and Pfleiderer twin screw extruder to compound the samples. The screw speed was set at
50rpm, and the temperature profile ranged from 175◦C in the feed section to 190◦C at the die
• Four different preparation methods of PP/wollastonite composites were used (untreated wollastonite no
stearic acid added, untreated wollastonite, stearic acid added during compounding, treated wollastonite no
stearic acid added, and treated wollastonite with stearic acid added). For each, we produced three variants,
with 2.5, 5, and 10% by weight of wollastonite filler.
• Finally analyse the structure of the elements using scanning electron microscope
