Methods in Teaching Social Science

 Constructivist approach  Thematic method

 Collaborative learning  Conceptual approach
 Experiential and Contextualized  Integrative approach

2
Constructivist
approach
• This approach is based on the assumption
that the students come to class with entry
knowledge and skills

• The students reflect on this new learned

knowledge, continue to make connection
to other concepts learned and construct
new meanings.

3
Collaborative learning
• This is based on the assumption
that students learn better when
they learn with others.

• Working with a group is less

threatening than working alone.

4
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

• It is learning beginning with experience

and ending in experience.

• is more specifically defined as "learning

through reflection on doing". Hands-on
learning can be a form of experiential
learning, but does not necessarily
involve students reflecting on their
product.

5
CONTEXTUALIZED LEARNING
• Contextual learning is based on a
constructivist theory of teaching
and learning. Learning takes place
when teachers are able to present
information in such a way that
students are able to construct meaning
based on their own experiences.

• Learning is rooted in human

experience, meaning, the context of
learning is experience itself
6
Thematic method
• Learning resolve around a theme

• Thematic teaching approach start with the

identification of a THEME the underlying
concept that allows for the structure and
organization of specific content across
disciplines

• it helps learners see meaningful

connections across disciplines or learning
areas (Subjects)

7
Conceptual learning
• It involves the process of concept
formation. Concepts are mental
constructions representing
categories of information that
contain defining attributes

• is a process by which students learn

how to organize information in
logical mental structure

8
Integrative approach
• This approach is anchored on the
assumption that teaching and learning
are more meaningful and further
enriched if lesson is connected to other
disciplines and is connected to real life
experiences.
• Specific methods and techniques are
suggested:
 Tri-Question
 Moral dilemma method
 Lesson indigenization
 Using varied learning activities
to cater student 9
